Thread: Training up to TKA Novice

Am I doing something wrong?

I have been training weapon skills and unarmed up to IV. Unarmed seems like the slowest and most painful skill to train out of the ones I have been working. As a test I took two similar missions and did one using unarmed and one using pistols. The difference is HUGE... ranged took 1/3 the time and I took almost no damage.

My normal method of attacking unarmed is to intimidate/blind/stun then use unarmedhit1 until dead. I try to fight things that con white. I am barehanded wearing a couple of pieces of composite armor. I have both pistol and unarmed trained to level IV.

As of now, unless actually getting to TKA novice vastly changes my fighting ability, I don't see the point of continuing this way. I wanted to get TK to be different from the 10 million BH and CH running around out there but if only TKM is viable and the rest is useless I am moving on.

Advice? Encouragement? Discouragement?

You aren't doing anything wrong. Unarmed brawling is terrible, and you WILL notice a difference in your ability to absorb damage when you hit TKA Novice. Your first box in the power tree will give you a huge speed increase, so that is something else to look forward to. If you REALLY want to see if it's worth it, or are just interested in seeing how big the difference is between an brawler- unarmed master and a teras kasi master just challenge one to a friendly duel-- you might be surprised. As for your technique, it's just fine. You WILL level faster in groups as long as it consists of people that do low amounts of damage not unlike yourself. And actually, if you throw a bleed shot on a mob before engaging you will actually speed up the process. Bleeds, as of right now, do not give you any pistol experience; so:

1) Bleed1

2) Bleed2 (if you have pistoleer)

3) intimidate @ 20m

4) stun

5) blind

6) bezerk/unarmedhit1 (your choice)

The most important thing you can do is to ensure your target is stunned and intimidated (HAM permitting) at all time.

Stick with it

Also I used my vibro knucklers even when I wasnt certified, it did about the same damage as without and was twice as fast. That helped me grind the unarmed tree. I spent most of the time in tatooine doing zocca(sp?) boars, womp rats etc...

Training Unarmed to TKA Novice is incredibly slow. Perhaps it was slower for me because of my technique, but now that I have reached TKA Novice, I can tell you the difference is incredible. My climb through the unarmed tree was similar to yours.

stun, blind, intimidate, unarmhit1 – take out a couple of con whites, rest, repeat

I am not much of a people person. I have always preferred melee fighting in all the RPG's I have ever played. I guess whacking something up close and personal is somehow more satisfying for me. I rarely hunt in groups, even then no more than 3, and avoid even medium level players using ranged weapons because I find they do level faster and have better weapons available more easily. It becomes frustrating to gain only 8 points of unarmed combat damage when fighting Rogue Banthas or Mountain Squills in a group. I found leveling up easier and less frustrating when going it alone.

I have a couple of tips which limited downtime for me, but others may have better ideas. I took on Novice Scout so I could make camps to rest and heal. So far, I am a 4,0,4,4 Scout without even trying. I keep hitting and the hides and bones just keep accumulating. I sell them to offset costs of stim packs, etc. When I rest, I remove all armor and sit in a chair to get the most out of the regen process. Some other players have commented as I sit out in the woods in my skivies, but I have a goal and will take whatever steps I need to to meet them.

Next, get some good VibroKnucklers. I hemmed and hawed whether or not I should go that route, but found life pretty much depended upon them. Bare fisted, which pool you hit is a gamble. I find I at least hit the health pool more often than not with VibroKnucklers. And, even though mine do less damage than bare fists though they are sliced, opponents go down much quicker.

I don't believe that many players understand exactly how long and tedious the road even to Teras Kasi Novice is. The road to Novice Fencer was much easier. For this reason alone, I don't think a couple of profession perks would be out of the question. Remember, even as Novice Teras Kasi Student your life is not secure. You can still get aggro'd easily and incapped or killed if you're not careful. However, you will be able to take on larger prey more easily ( as long as they aren't kiting you :>

As a final note to a long-winded post (my apologies), please respect those who have taken this road before us. When I /tell a TKM, I am always humble and refer to them as Master. I /bow when I greet them, and If I am to receive training I /kneel before them. Some may feel this is over the top, but as a TK Padawan so to speak, such a demeanor is fitting to me.

Cheers,

Paul

Thanks for the feedback! You give me enough hope that I will stick it out.

Yes I got scout automatically by harvesting (I capped at 30k xp leftover). At 4/2/4/1 currently. The basic camp lets me heal and change pets.

I am gonna go looking for good store for VK's (anybody know any on tarq?). Hopefully that will ease the 125k up to novice.

I have used the bleed thing as 1) it helps aggro mobs so I dont have to chase them down and 2) the damage doesn't deduct from my UA xp. As a metter of fact it was just that, that made me start doubting TKA... I could bleed, bodyhit2, bodyhit2... harvest. Sad really

It irritates me that everybody runs the same as everybody else in the game. So when a mob decides to run from me I have to switch to a ranged weapon to kill it. Would be nice if the mental/physical conditioning of unarmed/TKA gave bonuses to running speed. That way we could close faster and get away if need be.

Either way the main question I had as to whether it gets MUCH better at novice and how to get there has been answered.

on tarq i know of a couple good weaponsmiths, it just depends on what planet you are on.

I am currently on naboo and go to Noterac. Some others on naboo are Koserk, Madar, and I believe Sariff has a shop open on naboo now, though i still havnt gone to check it out. KorTech on corellia has some really good weapons as well, and Sariff has a shop on Talus if you go there.

hope this helps out
