I picked up TK with an alt after being away since the Big Nerf. I was a TKM forseveral months, and really enjoyed it.
I picked up novice TKtoday and had enough points in Combat XP to pick up xxx1, Combo Hit.
It does less damage than Melee Strike.
Umm, why? I experimented with it for two lairs, and never noticed that it did anything special except make me look really cool while attacking. It did substantially less damage than Melee Strike.

I noticed this as well....
I am a 4|4|4|4 TKA and my improved combo attack does substantially less damage then the melee strike, and the melee strike seems to be the most powerful strike I have, at a very low action cost, even though it doesn't change any states....
Also, I bought what I thought werefairly decent blaster fists, massassi knucklers, and vibro knucklers and whenever I equipped them, my damage and speed were much lower than when I had no weapon, and my action costs were also much higher... The only positive thing I noticed was that I seemed to hit the combo attack for more damage, but still not as much as my normal melee strike... Now granted, I don't know what good weapons are, since I'm not altogether in tune with the CU, but you'd think I'd be able to hit for more even with a mediocre weapon.
And by the way, I am not a PvP-er, only PvE.

Here's something I found for you, Braxius.....
2) "Unarmed damage" skill mod no longer stacks with the damage of an equipped weapon. It's either/or. This was apparently a bug in the pre-CU system. The only unarmed weapon with an equivalent damage output to a TKM with bare fists is the Katarn Knuckler, which is a quest reward on Kashyyyk.
3) Combo attack has a display bug in the combat spam left over from when it did damage to all three pools. The damage reported is 1/3rd of what it's actually doing. If you turn on verbose combat spam (in the "chat" tab of options), you'll see something like "you hit for 150 points of damage (150 kinetic), target's armor absorbed 50 points out of a possible 500" (numbers made up since I don't have actual values handy). So you're actually doing 450 points of damage, which can be confirmed by tracking the health bar of what you're hitting.

I wish they would fix this bug. This question is asked at least 5 times a week -- no offense to the original poster. It's a natural question... geez all they have to do is fix a flipping typo somewhere and in 2 months since the CU they can't do that? Pathetic.

Yeah I found that thread after I posted last night about the bug in the combo hit display. I'm not surprisedthe bug is here 2 1/2 months post-CU, since Teras Kasi isn't spelled J-E-D-I.
I'll also experiment using a blaster fist vs. unarmed to see what works better. I'm building this second toon to be a team-oriented PvP helper who can solo PvE, and I love TK too much to use anything else as a basis.

Combo hit is on a seperate cooldown so it can be used faster, that is the main adv.

For me, with a seemingly run of the mill blaster fist, I was doing much better unarmed still... and a combo with a blaster fist was still much lower than my melee strike. They are on a separate cool down? Even if the combo could be performed faster, you couldn't use it for very long because of the action costs though, right?
