Lets say if someone became a TKA then got enough combat exp would the def bouneses given from the TKA tree be there while useing other weopons than vk's or fists? Like say another meleer needed more ranged and melee def to last longer.

Based on what I have been told, both melee and ranged def will stack, so they work with any weapon. However they do not seem to do all that much, +10 melee def seems to be a difference of about 1-2health in pvp from what I saw playing around with skill mods last night.
Unarmed toughness however only applies when unarmed!

Ranged and melee defense don't work on damage taken, they work on the enemy's range modifier. Basically they make you harder to hit. If you still GET hit, then sucks for you.
