Depends on what you're doing.
If you're out hunting/grinding on general mobs (creatures and animals, not npc's) i prefer a suit of Kinetic ubese armor. Has very low encumbrance and can have up to 75% kinetic resistance (more if you get an exceptional suit or slices).
If you're fighting lots of factional mobs, its best to get armor with energy resistance. If you're pretty low level (not fighting tough stuff) a suit of Exceptional Bone armor, sliced for effectiveness, works great. It's got almost no encumbrance. Problem is finding some in today's composite-ruled world.
And then comes the composite armor. This stuff can get up to 90% resists to almost every damage type. only problem is, you generally cant wear a suit of it without buffs because the encumbrance is too high. This can be a bad thing for most players, and the smart ones only wear composite in high end pve (krayts, kimos, the various caves, DWB, for elders/nightsisters, etc.) and for PvP.

Up to what you are hunting, your secondary stats and how much you can spend.
Composite is the all around best if you can afford it, a must have for serious PvP, great for PvE too, usually in the 50%-80% range for most damage types, very high encumberance cost usually (most advanced sets you have to be buffed to put it on). You can find armor smiths that will make you a set designed for you and your HAM's but usually increases the price slightly.
Ubese is great for daily hunting and anything that does kinetic damage type (special protection to that). Usually much less expensive for a set, low to medium encumberance costs, kinetic protection is usually 40%-80%.
Padded for the fashion elite, for those of you that must have matching flashy outfits, usually 20%-70% kinetic protection depending on server. Medium to high encumberance, and cost is usually mid range.
There are a number of other types I won't list as they really wouldn't lend much to the list other then their style, these are the most popular and effective types use by most.
If you can only afford one set I would suggest Composite designed for you HAM (Jack of all trades armor), or Ubese if you mainly PvE.
If you prefer a chalange you can run out hunting in your Boxers, TKA toughness/mitigation/intimidate makes for a very powerful punching bag too chuck buffs in there and rarely would you need armor.
I would also speak with a local Armor Smith on your server about it as they may be able to make some recomendations based on the server resources, prices, and there experience with armor types.

now theres a question for you lol
no really i dont know wat my ithorian should wear i got a uber suit of sentinel armor (ithorian composite but looks different and cant change colors(&&@% the dev for not letting ithorians change the colors)
but i dont want that suit to get used too much and i cant really find a tailor to make me some really kool clothes
can anyone help and give suggestions?

i dont wear any most of the time, i just roll around overt unarmoured the only time it really goes on is raids etc when there is a good chance of there being 10+ people of the oposite faction.
and the armour i have is 39 stun and around 87 base composite.
