read some of these responses.

Do these people realize what it is like to play a melee character is the game engine?

it scares me that Ralph woudl base any decisions by the majority of people on this thread.

some highlights.

"

Current melee players have no problem catching me in the city and I'm a Bothan Master Scout.

Please don't screw everything up based on PVP not everyone plays it "

"

So um... you'd penalize people with ranged weapons in PvE combat just to please the Brawlers who want to do the impossible (hit people from 60m)?"

"Holo No!!

Ranged should OWN melee in open spaces!

Also it would kill PvE .

Please dont."

"

Ugh.

You want to nerf ranged fighters even more?

Yeah, that's an idea - let the melee people catch up to us even more quickly and spam their knockdown moves even sooner and take us down becuase of the HUGE damage modifier already in place.

This makes no sense at all to me.

I got knocked down yesterday at over 30m.

You are telling me they need MORE power?

/sigh"

"

you cant justify slowing down ranged users except to say that it would please melee combatants whining about being kited.....its not realistic whatsoever. "

"If Melee becomes viable against ranged, then this game is not Starwars anymore. (Except Jedi. They are the only exception) "

"

Anyone stupid enough to bring a knife to a gunfight gets whatever they deserve. If I wanted to keep getting into sword fights, I'd play DAoC. This is Star Wars! Stop worrying about gimping us gunmen because someone chooses to play a melee fighter.

Give them a special melee class armor that can only be worn by them that absorbs various gunfire or something. Fix carbineer, fix commando, and fix bounty hunters first! Screw what some moron with a knife or brass knuckles thinks! Thats their **edit** fault to begin with!

And if you do give melee guys increased speed, does that mean all we'll have to do is arm a knife to run faster? Gah!"

Wow. Umm jeez all melee class people want is the ability to be effective. In all fairness to teh ranged people on this thread, alot are concerned with PvE. i.e. not being able to kite mobs. I understand that. but if melee changes are implemented mayeb melee can actually "tank".

As far as the ranged users specifically replying to PVP issues in Ranged vs melee. ROFL.. please.

If you spent all your skill points in ranged weapon skills then yes.. you shoudl get beat if/when you are caught. In alll honesty catching ranged users would still be extremely difficult and extremely dangerous even after a "speed modification" of somesort. Every ranged class has an ranged knockdown. Lets not even mention bleeds, or ranged dizzy. or Ranged poisons. Then the ham costs for melee's to clsoe the distance damage us. The damage form teh ranged person damages us. so after we do close. we will be hurt. and the inept melee skillperson ( with a ranged weapon in their hands), still ahs pretty good shot of killing us before we can kill them.

AlsoI find the "knife gunfight statement" was awful. It has coem back to haunt the DEVS so many times. Lets throw that statement out the window before we discuss improvign the game. The advantages of ranged vs melee are apparent to anyone that has played any game. Off handed statements liek that one seem to magnify or embolden misconceptions about game balance and SWG vision.

I just don't see why a marksman should have any kind of accuracy while running and shooting over their shoulder. It's just silly.

more highlights.

Frankly...

I feel sad for you that you even need to ask this as a serious question. All throughout development, it has been stated time and time again that a melee will only be effective against ranged combat in close quarters, a confined space, or if the melee is VERY VERY good.

Star Wars is NOT about polearm users and fencers. Anyone who can't accept that is not going to be happy in the Star Wars universe for long anyway.

If you start crippling ranged fighters in SWG just so swordslingers can feel good about themselves, then you water down the beautiful Star Wars Universe into a muddy cesspool of mediocrity.

Iseriously doubt George Lucas would approve of warping his universe in the manner the 'pro melee' people suggest.

Thesepolearm/sword/etcfighters just want to be cheap jedi. I say forget it

umm there are no close quarters. there is no way to close the gap. there is no way to COMPETE with ranged people.

Jeebus people!! we want to have fun to.

If you want realism...

Yah, it's sad really how clueless the players are that are posting replies like that. I guess they live in fear of being nerfed so are in denial to how the melee situation is.

Here is another thing.. in the first star wars movie

that imperial looking at Chewbacca's big ass in an enclosed space ( i thinkit was an elevator or soemthing ) looked scared.. I dont think it was because he was afraid the 8ft tool wookie was gonna break his cuffs and pull out a pistol and run incircles spamminga special..

I think he was afraid of getting his skull caved in by a meaty ass fist.... cause the guy had a gun in his holster.

what about that all you "brawlign isnt star wars" whiners.

if melee changes arent implemented and all these ranged guys when and if they get a Force sensitive slot are gonna be bitching cause there Jedi toon is gettign kited by L33T N00B X the novice marksmen and gettign killed..

frankly i wont be around to see it if soem changes arent made now.

/rant

And all you Boba Fett wannabe's...

He never won a fight in the movies. Never a stand up fight. all his technology advantages were nullified by good tactics. Running behind trees' pillars anything with cover. Disarming attacks etc.

And hemost certainly not winagainst Novice Jedi's ( like Episode 2 ). NOVICE jedi's basically advanced brawlers with some philosophical bent and untrained unwieldy force abilties.

Bounty Hunter's should be in the same mold as smugglers. Scum, villians, fringers.. sorry there jsut isnt a Bounty Hunter Country Club in every major city. Where they swap brawler killling stories with the local nobles over glass of wine.

and any Bounty Hunter that doesnt agree withteh fringe society, villian take... is not a bounty hunter.. they are secuirty guards at the galactic 7-11.

basically a good combat person should be trained in range warfare and hand to hand warfare. There is a reason why miltary peopel get Hand to Hand training still to this day.

Most elite comabt professions reflect thsi in their requirements. but only master unarmed.

Melee elite professions are that. Elite. meaning ya. in hand to hand fight they are at a disadvantage. If any speed modifications get applied to Melee classes it will balance out nicely.

If and When a melee person can clsoe to melee range it will be a clsoe fight regardless of your training. the HAM cost and damage taken to get to melee range means the average melee profession will be at half ham or less at teh time of melee combat. What more advantage do you want gunslinger ? We gambled getting here. No you gamble in melee.

Balance.

Sorry I dont want to unarmed lunge someone from 60m. I dont want to be invincible. I want a chance.

Also dont you think some melee love will engender more strategy in fights?

2 groups meet each other at 64 meters. the snipers hit the dirt, the docs hit the dirt. suppressing fire is laid down/ chem warfare applied. Support classes can use their support profession skills they spent 2 months working on. Meanwhile the other side identifies support classes. the send their suicicdal berserker pikeman aroudn the flank to attack support. the opposing snipers have to make a decision. attack the support or teh flankers. the combatanats also have to make a decision. do i protect my support or attack teh enemy?

all in all I Think this is a good change to the current system.

Sorry for jumping all over the place but this issue has got me rattled.

Nobody likes getting their profession put into line, but reading that combat balance thread was starting to make me ill-- that's when I had an idea. Burst run is a sprint, usually used to the game to run for your life. I don't know any one that can look over their shoulder and shoot a gun while sprinting. So rule number 1 is as follows: "DON'T ALLOW A GUN TO BE FIRED IF YOU ARE BURST RUNNING".

Next, the melee classes are about the most physically fit group by virtue of what they do. Sure, a gunfigter might have a REALLY strong index finger... but melee people are in better shape. As one progresses in melee skills they become even more finely tuned physically. Rule number 2: "AS YOU ADVANCE IN MELEE, BURST RUN TIME SHOULD BE LENGTHENED AND TIME BETWEEN BURST SHOULD BE SHORTENED".

As far as I can see, this fixes the problem with not being able to catch up with a kiter, and a gunslinger that uses some decent tactics will STILL have an opportunity to get away. What do y'all think?
