How does our combat level balance within the game?

Is it mainly a rank number the matters in pve more then pvp?

I've seen a few assorted players on my server, 1 is level 71 and the other is level 73, and I watched a hand full off duels, and they defeated alot of level 80 players including a Jedi.

CL always matters.I don't know all of the math involved, but the higher your CL above your opponent, the more of a damage bonus you receive upon hitting. There is also a bonus associated with attacker's accuracy when compaired to defenders appropriate defensive skill. To get a taste of what effect CL has, just group with a CL80 PC and attack a CL80 mob and take note of the damage you do and the damage you take. Then ungroup and attack the same mob, you will see a large difference unless you are CL75+.

I honestly don't see how a CL71 could kill a CL80 PC unless that CL80 had a horrible template or the 71 *really* knew what they were doing and the 80 did not. Defeating a Jedi that is less than 3/4 templated is fairly easy for anyone with good combat skills and equipment in the CL70-80 range.

Might just have answered that yourself, the 71 might just be grouped with a 80 everytime. More or less nullifies much of the difference if his template is good.

EDIT : Cause I cant spell if my life depends on it.

CL matters because of your health bar. 1000 health in a room of CL80s hitting you as a CL80 means you last 1/3rd the time of true CL80s.

Heh, I hadn't even thought about the duels being between grouped players. And as mentioned above, there is always the HP difference...

the biggest thing you should notice is damage and to-hit modifiers when there is a significant difference in CL for you and a MOB or other player.

CL always matters if you dont think so fight a lvl 90 or better and your a 80 you have to fight smarter than you would a lvl 80. When i was a lvl 75 I had the hardest time fighting lvl 80 there are mods with lvls I think also not just hit points

Personly I don't believe it makes as much differnce people make out, at least as long as you are going to be grouped with a CL80 for PvE so the damage modifier doesn't effect you as much (remember you take the CL of the highest group member).

The damage modifers between CL have no effect in PvP & so apart from the HAM differnce you have you are at no real disadvantage. But then since you have powerboost it matters less since you have that extra 500 health anyway.

I do think nearly everyone is still too focused in that little number that might not matter as much as they feel it does.

it makes a difference for health, speed, damage output and everthing else come to think of it. But it doesnt have an effect on the grind up to 80. All i do with alts i make is get them to the point of grinding the 125k and such for any novice boxes then i hit dant with a bol/picket group. In that situation CL doesnt matter if your grouped with lvl 70+'s because you wont get aggroed and you will never gain aggro with the little damage you do.

But physically comparing a 1v1 with you as a lvl 20 and a lvl 80 picket u will get destroyed. just depends which situation

The Corro is right! Im level 76 at the moment because I dropped 4004 doc to 3003 doc and picked up bacta toss for the time being. Im still just as evil in pvp as I was when I was 80. The only difference is the little bit of ham you lose, but its not very much to be even noticeable.

I was able to take out 2-3 level 80's before dropping to 76 and I still can.

It does have an effect on pve though, so make sure your grouped when doing high end pve.
