I'm currently a Master Smuggler/Master Carbineer but I'm thinking of dropping smuggler for TKM. My main reason for this is that I really like the idea of innate armor. It would let me fight in my flight suit or Imperial uniform without supreme disadvantage.
However, I've been told that TKM doesn't mix well with ranged professions. Is this true? Does anyone have a current character builder website for me to take a look at? It seems the plethora of character builders that came out at the time of the CU have all disappeared.

Innate will work no matter what weapon you have equipped, the only thing that won't work is CoB as youll have to unequip your ramged weapons and then re-equip it every time you want CoB to work, if youre ranged then you'd be better off using kiting techniqes instead of tanking your enemy. Bounty hunter would be more suited if you want a rnaged tank, duelist stance adds 250 defence, can be used with a ranged weapons and has a +return fire+ ability with it but i don't know how much dmage it returns. A better use of skillpoints might just be to get TKA x1xx and stick your other skill points in something more useful.
Its a hell of a lot of skillpoints wasted when you could just get a cheap set of armour and be an insanley better fighter.

Generally it is a bad idea to mix ranged and melee templates because it is wasteful in skill points and because the special attacks don't transfer from one to another. Also, innate armor doesn't work when you have a ranged weapon equipped (your carbine).

Actually innate armor does work, or it does with MPistols. I currently have MTK/ Mpistols/smuggler 4040 and can verify thatthe innate armordoes indeed work as long as you have no armor equipped. Were you wearing a mabari belt when you tried it?

+return fire+ = about 25 damage

macro unequip weapon, imp cob, equip weapon. or put the two right next to one another on your tool bar, and don't set a default attack. if you do it right, you won't even notice it. I have had loads of range people ask me how i do it and don't appearunequip my weapon or skip a beat attacking. i tell them i do, it just looks like i do not.

Im a Master Carbineer and TKM and I am doing just fine when i grind. It works out cause you have enough time to switch if need be. and the innate armour still works.
