Thread: Why armor rules IMHO

Well for a long time I was a TKA that only wore clothing, during the easy KD days this was not a problem because nothing could stand up and fight me. After the first KD nerf I realized I needed new tactics to take on tuff monsters, due to the updated HAM costs wearing armor and using KD was not an option, it simply cost way too much. So, I continued to kick mobs arses in my tactical skinsuit.

Then they "adjusted" KD again. Now I can only do it every 30 sec...this hurts, so for awhile I experimented with still only wearing clothing, but I put on some composite boots and gloves, to compensate for some of the damage I was taking... it helped but not a ton. I was still taking very large damage if I didn't get hit in the hands or feet. So I decided to try something new:

I was shopping for a new pistol because I have been moving up the smuggler line a bit and had recently hit novice smuggler but I was still using a scout blaster. At the shop I was shopping at I found some mabari armor for sale for 1 credit per piece. At first, I was just going to buy it and sell it on the bazaar for some easy profit, but then I was looking at the armor and noticed that all armor has an AR of Light.. so I pulled out my nifty "how armor works" printout that used to be on the starwarsgalaxies.com main page and started reading about armor and how ratings and resists work.

If no one else noticed, and I don't know the exact patch date, they implemented armor ratings again and armor piercing on weapons. So now if you wear clothing you have an armor rating of none, but all personal armor has a rating of light. Depending on the armor piercing of the weapon being used on you you take either reduced damage or increased damage (not sure on exact values, print out is at home and I'm at work).

Anyway, after I purchased the Mabari armor, I noticed it was light armor rating and like 4-7% kinetic resists for each piece. So I put on the full suit and compared how much damage I took while wearing that and when wearing clothing when fighting Baz Nitches on Dathomir (yes I still solo them). The difference was very noticeable, even before I had debuffed the mob (Stun, Blind, Intimidate).

I know most of you don't wear armor because of the encumberances, but there are some really low encumbering armors out there if you don't go for Composite, I'm not 100% but I think mabari has the lowest HAM encumberances and after slicing (if you get a HAM slice) you could have some very light armor that doesn't penalize your specials much.

I'm going to keep experimenting with different types of armors and see how they hold up. Just remember that if you have any armor with vulnerability to kinetic or any other damage type, when you get hit in the spot that armor is on the damage is taken as if you had an armor rating of none. SO armors like bone armor will help you in no way vs kinetic (melee) damage.

Just thought I would provide some information and also see what others think on this issue.

Anyone else have any thoughts/experiences on armor usage?

I've worn ubese body armor sense unarmed brawler, and picked up some chitin gloves later. Both with good kinetic defence. They will block 20-90 damage and the encumberance is not noticable.(berserk costs 4 more pnts than without my armor).

Im gonna try a full suit out soon, but 80% of my incaps come from health, not action, so i may just stick to wearing health armor parts.

Well, for tougher critters, armor is awesome! I was running around endor with a couple of friends, one of which is a pretty good novice doctor. Without armor on I was getting hit for about 200-300 HAM which REALLY kept my friend on his toes. I migrated some stats, bought and sliceda full set of pre patchcomposite, and wore it to endor. The beasties were hitting me for60-80 most times. Throw an intimidate and a stun in there and it became 19-25 HAM. These are level 60 MOBs!!! Sometimes I do get the occasional 100 pointer while in armor...but this would probably incap me if I was just wearing clothes. The downside of the whole thing is that you can't style nearly as much but with the experience I've been making on endor now I find this acceptable.

If you DO wear armor, make sure you make a macro to take it off and put it on quickly. This will shorten your downtime quite abit as the regenerative HAM costs from armor are terrible.

Hope this helps!

I gotta agree with you. I wear a Chitin and Ubese combo with mostly 36% kenetic resists, if you dont spam your specials youll kick a lot of ass.

i wear a full set of ubese armor, sliced by a master smuggler, i gotta stress getting all your armor sliced to lower the encumberances it makes a gigantic difference on your ham cost, for lower level planets like tatooine or naboo u dont really need it, wear it for attacking npc's but u wont need it for animals unless you're on dathomir or dantooine(wear it!!)if anyone knows how to create the macro for putting a whole set of armor on and off, will u please post it?

I'm not GREAT with the macro stuff but this is what I did:

1. Drag each piece of armor to toolbar slot on an unused toolbar.

2. Make a macro that that uses the command- ui action toolbarSlotXX where XX is slot 00 for the first square on the first row and 11 for the last square on the first row.

3. drag the macro icon to your tool bar where you put the armor.

Now I know that there is a way to reference a bar that you are not currently on, ya may have to hit one of the crafting boards or the guide board to find out what it is.

Referencing another toolbar:

/ui action toolbarPaneXX where XX is 00 to 05. And yes, the capitalization is important.

Ive tried using armor a few times, but my biggest gripe with it was the cost vs amount of time its actually useful.

This was about a month ago, so if it's changed let me know...

Full set of Chitin Armor - almost 40k.

Duration of use- varied but my chestplate and leggins' condition was down to zero in 3.5-4 days.

I really noticed a difference in the amount of damage i was taking, but it just didn't seem worth it for the amount of time it actually lasted.

Armor is ok in PvE but Useless against 2hand, Polearm,Rifle and Carbines because most of these weapons have Armor piercing1 if not 2 so they hit for just as much if not more and your still takin higher HAM costs and decreased HAM regen unless your buffed

Armor is essential in PvP IMHO, along with said armor equipping/deequipping macros. When you're out of range of your target, and they're shooting you, you're not going to be using specials anyway so throw that armor on! You just might live long enough to catch him, or to run away and find a nice confined area to draw him into. Then after he follows you and you knock him flat, remove your armor and go town on him.
