Just depends on what you want out of it.
One of the hot templates is TKM and Master Rifle. Works well, and with the insanely out of balance speeds a rifleman can get to the one second speed cap.
Something that was a lot of fun for me, however, was TKM, Master Pistols, Smuggler Dirty Fighting, Exploration from Scout, and Some Medic.

Carbineers should be group in big combogroups. TKMs have got no areaattack thats worth to much in PvP (Swordsmans areaKD..).
Pistol is good if your fighting one on one and he starts running in an open area.
Rifleman deals damage from long distances and TKM should be a good combo with it if they decide to come near.

most of pistoleers specials dont work
carb has no defences

TKM/Rifleman, great fun to play, and leaves you enough for 2 lines of medic.
I miss those fun days.

and in pvp...killing people before they got close...
