I just got Novice, so I went out and used Vibroknucklers for the first time. I took out a couple lairs and ended up with 80 battle fatigue. Whereas I used to take out those lairs (and they were harder) with only maybe 15-20 battle fatigue.

What gives?

nope, only thing that adds BF is getting hit more often. If I were forced to guess, you probably hit the mob with stun, blind, dizzy while unarmed (get hit much less) and didn't use any of these with the knucks on? Yes? No?
