I am a Master Smuggler/Master Swordsman who is going to have to drop swords after the CU in order to optimize my SP.
I have ALWAYS wanted to take become a TKM and now is my chance.
BUT
I need some help understanding exactly how the CU is affecting TKMs in order to decide if I want to master the profession or not.
Can someone answer these questions:
If I am a TKM/Master Smuggler do lose my TKM defenses as soon as I put on my Recon Armor or pick up a gun?
What Certs/abilities do TKMs get and when do they get them?
Have any of the regular TK abilites such as meditate and powerboost been affected by the CU? How?
Any help in any of this is greatly appreciated.
I think I'm going to do
Master Smuggler/ TKM and 2 lines of Commando.
or some combination of those. If not that it's MS/MBH for me.

So, let me get this straight.
I'm kickin' ass and dodgin' blaster fire like Remo Williams, right?
Then I pull out my blaster and all of a sudden I forget how to sidestep laser fire and I get my butt handed to me?
Is that how that works?
If so- That would SUCK.

Armor - Yes you lose your defenses. Gun - No you shouldn't.
Now that makes SENSE. Thanks.
Otherwise, no one would take TKM
..well, except Jedi.
Although, I wonder how TKM defenses work against area attacks or grenades?

Atama is correct, the defenses are only negated by donning armor. In response to your other question (grenades and area attacks) no clue yet

I'll probably be one to know, I'm planning on staying TKM/Master Commando 'til after the CU, provided the respec lets me...and if I can use my flamethrower and grenades while wearing hotpants and a shirt, I'll be one happy gal. Even better will be using my knuckler and wearing something other than comp. Heck, wearing said hotpants and a shirt, or even my BE'd melee defense clothing. I can still see myself going TKM/Master Brawler or TKM/Swordsman, ranged has never really suited me...if I do, I might even see the below:
noob 1: wutz she doin over there with no armor? no gun 2? jeez wutta nub!
noob 2: lol voritors she gonna get pwn3d!
noob 1: (shouts) hay chess! cn we have ur stuf when ur ate up?
(a few minutes later, I'm standing in a pile of bodies harvesting them)
noob 1: did u see that!
noob 2: man that rokz!

i'm hoping you're one of the few of us actually testing the real profession as the impression i got from the description of unarmed defense is that it applies when unarmed. do you have a link or something i could check out because from what i'd seen it worked the other way around...defense sticks when armor put on (though we'd move andattackway slower as well as miss more (which will take some time to get used to)) but is tied to the weapon you're using - or...is this killer-defense i'm reading about actually the ranged and melee defense in the trees?

Good god I'm confused.
I wish those damn frogs would open up already.
As I understand it. You CAN have a weapon (ranged or melee) and still retain your defenses. BUT once you don armor you are a normal schmuck in chainmail.
This would make sense because if you lose your defenses when you pick up a weapon that would mean TKM wouldn't be suitable to add to ANY template that wanted to do anything else but TKM.
