Nicely written. I agree on most things and for my part I don't think that TK Need (a lot) a balancing. BUT we sure have major issue to be fixed. Like... the hit modifier ? a -5 in melee range ? come on. Even pistol get +12. You can be stuck in meditation like forever too if you LD when meditate.

Why when my friends fight with a gun they get like 800 xp I me, for taking all the damage merely half of it ? I have obtain pistol III in one day when I got unarmed III in 5 days. Understand me, I do not complain no to level enough fast, but it's just like a good reward vs risk. I think there is less risk to shoot with a gun at60m range then when the target come to you in melee, it's already dead.

Btw that's only reality facts. I hope one day it will join your philosophy description which is wise and good.

"Philosophy of Teras Kasi." Teras Kasi is fiction, the force is fiction and this is a videogame. In a videogame you can punch through a solid steel wall and meditate to heal the deadliest of poisons although we know no one can do these things in real life.If a guycan use The Force to bitchslap someone 20 feet away, a TKA should be able to do as much damage asa blaster rifle with his fists.

This is one of the worst things I have heard on this board. In case you have forgotten this is called a video game. It is not real life, it never has been and never likely will be. The purpose of a video game is to have fun, and rolling over and accepting that your fighting class should be owned by marksmen because they have the guns and you dont isnt fun. Before shoveling this crap on us remeber this is supposed to be a game, not a remake of real life set in star wars.

I can appreciate your post. It's well written, but I disagree with it's content. As a couple of other people have pointed out, this game is not about realism. Otherwise, everyone would die (or get incaped) from a single blaster bolt. There are so many glaringly unrealistic things about this game that justifying low brawler damage with the "reality" argument rings rather hollow IMO. How about portable houses that turn into paper when you feel like moving? Or perhaps the ability to jog at high speeds forever, while carrying say, 10 suits of full armor? How about the ability of marksmen to hit anything while moving. Honestly, try picking up a deer rifle and shooting a frog from 30m out while running. It's beyond absurd.

If we agree that SWG is not supposed to be a reality simulator, then what we're left with is just a game, designed for fun and little else. As a game, it has variety to keep people interested and to provide different styles of play to people with different tastes. But in order for those various professions to be fun, they have to be more or less balanced, otherwise the "underpowered" professions/skills will be simply ignored by the vast majority of the playerbase. Only the most extreme role players ignore comparative advancement rates. If another profession can be substantially more successful, while taking fewer risks, most people are going to be upset, and eventually abandon the underpowered profession. Unused professions might as well not exist, and therefore diminish the variety and overall quality of the game.

That's why brawler should be balanced with marksman. That's why we think we should do as much damage. That's why we don't care if it's not realistic, and why you shouldn't care either. It's all about fun.

Interesting read, though I don't agree with any of it. TKA needs to be a comparable class to other combat classes, period. That doesn't have to mean they dish out more damange - frankly what I would like to see is TKA artists having massive, massive evade ability. That would fall right in line with my idea of the class. So I may have to close the distance on someone at range, but I'll also evade 2x the blaster fire anyone else will along the way.

Well thought out post but wrong. SWG is a MMORPG which is a game. It is to have fun. SOE has said that they want the classes balanced. I fail to see why it is balanced for TKA to take so much damage yet reap the same results. Risk vs. Reward seems just a tad disparate right now.

If you even want to go down the road of realism, why can the doctor heal me over and over and the human mob won't attack the doctor? How about breaking off and attacking the pistoleer/rifleman who is attacking a specific pool?

Plainly stated, there is still some balancing that needs to be done, not only with TKA but TKA is what I play, so I comment on it.

I thinkthe point Ryu was trying to make was that, aside from the Force and blasters (and what have you in weaponry), it is supposed to be realistic in that the laws of physics kind of apply. Like you're not going to make someone explode by throwing abanana at them, that'd just be stupid. If abanana were a weapon in game, wouldn't itseem kinda stupidif it did the same amount of damage as a shaft of burning hot energy? I think so.

I like how it's balanced. It would take away from the video game if it leaned toward the lameness of equality. If you're going to be a brawler and/or teras kasi master, you're going to have to deal with the well known fact that your fist isn't going to be a good weapon to take down an aircraft with. The game is balanced and realistic in the way that it believably follows the laws of physics (don't argue with me about blasters or the Force, I'm not talking about that). If you don't like how it's balanced then.. don't be a brawler.

So you've decided to take the less Star Wars-ish road, and go down that unarmed path toward teras kasi master. Yet, you want your low level skills in unarmed to match up perfectly with your friends who tote blasters and grenades around, eh? Sorry kiddo, you've got a few knowledge wires mixed up. There are several imbalances in not using weapons that you probably should be made aware of.

The most obvious one is the fact that you can't attack from a distance. You're always going to be chasing after your opponents, moreso if they're other players. Players are gonna be targeting specific pools and running away, spraying enough blaster energy at you you'd think there was a plasma leak coming from a faulty starship engine. Let's hope your burst run works better than theirs does, because if it doesn't, then it won't matter how well you can fight, you'll never get the drop on them.

The second most obvious one is that no matter how many times you punch me in the face. Be it one time, or a thousand times, you're never going to break through my skull the way a good ol' fashioned bullet will. In game, you'll notice right now that your Master Brawler is still doing less damage than Intermediate Marksman. How is this not realistic? You've got a gun in your right hand, nothing in your left hand. Sorry bud, if you're going to toss aside the gun when your opponent's blasting away at you, you deserve to die. Even at mid-level Teras Kasi levels, you still shouldn't be able to do more damage than low level Marksman.

Sure, you should be able to hit a hell of a lot more often than the low level marksman, but if you take a blaster bolt to the stomach, it should hurt you a lot more than you should be able to kick him for.

Now, why is it that a brawler takes more damage than a Marksman? A Marksman gets to stay the hell away from his opponent during a fight, while a brawler has to stand there next to him, and take the lickings as often as he's throwing them out. I don't understand why this makes you mad. What? You didn't know what you were getting into? This is how it's SUPPOSED to be.

Why are you sounding so frustrated with the fact that it takes a lot out of you to do a spinning roundhouse kick followed by an elbow followed by a backhand? Of course that kind of stuff is going to make you get out of breath. Doing a spinning triple scissors kick followed bya flurry of punches and a head-butt leaves you more exhausted than pulling a freaking trigger.

Why are all of you so surprised? A Martial Artist DOES more. He's more involved with the fight than a Marksman. He takes more damage, he gets tired faster, and he can't outpower a bullet. Why does this surprise any of you? Why does it bother you?

What? Because it's a game? Because it's a game an unarmed person has to unrealistically be able to contend with blaster users? Screw that. If you want to contend with the blaster users, pick up a blaster of your own. There doesn't need to be "balancing" against Marksmen.

So it takes you longer to move up the brawler tree than it does the marksman tree. So it's harder to become a teras kasi master than it does a Master Pistoleer. So what?

It's MUCH easier to learn how to fire a gun, even to snipe a person from 500 meters away than it is to Master a complex Martial Art form. Hands down, no matter how much skill goes into firing a blaster, there's 100 times more practice and skill that goes into Martial Arts.

Brawler isn't even martial arts. Being a brawler is just the basics. You need brawler to become a Smuggler, but a Smuggler isn'ta master of martial arts. Brawler is like street fighting. Even the name suggests this. A guy who gets into a lot of bar fights isn't supposed to be able to beat the crap out of a Police Officer, who has his trusty side-arm with him.

In order to become a Martial Artist, or in this case, a Teras Kasi Artist, it takes a lot of time, discipline, patience, and skill to get good at. You move through the basics before you even come to teras kasi itself. This is where it starts to pay off.

Once you begin learning the mystical art of teras kasi, it begins to pay off. You get much more defensive bonuses through training, many more special moves, you're much more accurate, much faster, do a lot more damage, and you're even able to heal yourself, even wounds. This takes a lot of work to accomplish though, and is not for those with little patience.

Even if you do become a Master of Teras Kasi, you're still not invincible. You still won't even compare against a Master Commando. You still will take much more damage against opponents than a Pistoleer will. You probably won't even do as much damage. This is how it should be, as your chosen weapon is merely your own fist.

Even if you dishonorably take arms with a vibroknuckler, you're still using a knife against a blaster. While your damage will be significantly improved, you're not an unstoppable killing machine. You're not meant to be.

This is how it is IRL. Sure, you can't go around and kill things as effectively as a Navy Seal. Against a Marine Sniper, you're going to lose everytime. Yet, for some weird reason... people still learn Martial Arts.

There should be no changes with teras kasi, unless there are actual bugs with the moves themselves. Balancing though? No need. When you choose to fight with your fist, you're choosing a less powerful weapon compared to a blaster.

This comes from a guy who is learning to become a teras kasi master in SWG. So I'm not trying to screw over teras kasi so that I'll be able to fight them with a blaster easier. Nay, I am a teras kasi artist at heart. My character eventually will become a Master of Teras Kasi. When I take this position, I do so knowing full well that I'm not nearly as effective as a Pistoleer, or a Rifleman, a Bounty Hunter or a Commando.

And I do so with a grin on my face. All teeth and no humor.

I disagree as well. SWG is a game and comparissons to real life are just outright silly. I enjoy being a an Unarmed fighter, but I do not want to be a leming that the original poster seems to think he should be. (I will never be a leming)

I enjoyed reading your post very much. Agree'd with 90% of it even. Cept there is one thing you forget, even as you keep bringing up the "IrL" here is one point that must stand out.

Dead is Dead.

A bullet to the head, will kill you just aswell as a baseball bat to the head. (Yes in one blow)

Every profession should have their "area" of death as we could call it. No profession should excel at all ranges.

Peace.

(Yeah Billy the Kid coulda shot Bruce Lee at range and killed him, but let ole Bruce close distance and he could of killed that man in one blow...)

p.s. I never really understand the TK til I read bout them in SW:EU... Good read, check it out.

"This is how it is IRL."

Really? REALLY now? This is how it is IN REAL LIFE. You actually think that?

In real life we have aliens shooting people with ray guns? I think that someone with as skewed a view of reality as you kills his argument rather soundly when he bases it all on realism.

talk to a martial artist a master and he'll tell you...a fist can do as much damage as a bullet a kick can pierce flesh like a blade....if you want to strive for realism why the hell are we even seeing a blaster beam? it's a beam of light you wouldn't see anything other then the guy getting knocked off his feet and on to his back with a hole perfectly burned and cauterized...right through his heart...so spare me this "in real life" malarky this is a game no one wants to be walking death machines but we do want to be pretty **edit** impressive isn't that the point of being a martial artist in ANY game? yous tart out slow and weak and gradually build up to be a instant murder death kill counter? but hey it's cool...just wait til teras kesai artists start making their presence known WITHOUT knuckles
