basically it's whatever is viewed as the latest "fad" in PvP.
i am pretty sure that Combat Medic/Rifleman is the current FOTM

...one of them. I'm pretty sure Swordsman/* and Fencer/* template stackers could be consideredFOTM too. Basically the professions where everyone cries "OMG! NERF xxx THEIR HORRIBLY BROKEN" are hot candidates for the FOTM title...wait, that's almost all professions...except SL and Pikeman maybe. :-)

FOTM is just what people who aren't a particular combination of professions say about another combo of professions that happens to be more effective (or at least perceived as such) than one's own. People find that certain combinations of professions (BH + Pistoleer, CH + Medic, Doc + TKM, Fencer + _____) happen to fit together very well, and so lots of people try them out, decide they kick butt and ARE cool together. And, those that get beaten by these combinations call them FOTM cuz they feel that their Architect + Marksman combo should be just as good in PvE or PvP.
It's the same as those who scream "template stacker!" at people.
Everyone has 250 skill points to use. If you find a good combo of professions, one that's effective and works well together, chances are someone will scream at you that you're stacking your professions and exploiting and griefing and blah blah blah. Ignore them and move on.

Laeren, 'FOTM' isn't just an ill-conceived insult bandied about between 12 year olds.. the concept is quite real and is a symptom of the imbalances of the game as it moves from patch to patch.
For example. When composite armour didn't protect well, and doctor buffs were highly variable it was very common for someone to be killed in seconds after being KDed. This made high-damage classes with KD/Dizzy over-powered, and hence TKM was the 'FOTM' class.
Then composite got better, doc buffs became reliable, and new foods became available to solve the ham costs problem. Suddenly TKMs were facing 80% kinetic armour, and their KD/Dizzy became less effective. Now the Riflemen became 'FOTM'. No-one had stun protection, and they could shoot all day long without emptying their mind.
Then the geo dungeon came out, and people started making Ackley batons. Now came a class with heavy Stun damage, and the defenses to avoid being shot by the Riflemen! Now Fencers became 'FOTM'.
Then composite got really *really* good. Stun layers were in. PSGs were working. The uber pvpers could wear 90% resist helmets. Now it took so long to kill people with normal weapons that a new damage type was found, that went through all the defenses and armour - poisons. This was combined with the Geo cave venom to make an even greater difference. Now Combat Medics were 'FOTM'.
In the next month before the combat rebalance I see PVP being split into two broad 'camps' on the battlefield:
1. The poisoners: Combat Medic mixed with Doctor or Rifleman
2. The resisters: Doctor mixed with TKA or Fencer
In conclusion I think it's very interesting to study the FOTM of each period, and see why they came to be popular. If the Devs did this more often a lot of the PVP imbalances we have to deal with would not have happened imho.
