Thread: The Definitive Guide To DPS

I am tired of some aspiring MIT wannabes posting all sorts of ambiguous numbers on this board. So, let all get up to speed with DPS calculations. A complete explanation of weapon speed, and it's relationship to DPS and player speed modifiers can be found here...

http://killyourpc.org/swg/speedguide.html

The COMPLETE formula for DPS calculation is...

M ((Wmin + Wmax) / 2)

DPS =------------------------------

(S * D) * (100 - P) / 100.0

DPS: the average amount of damage done per second.

Wmax: the minimum damage range of your weapon.

Wmin: the maximum damage range of your weapon.

M: the damage modifier of the special attack you are using.

S: the speed rating of the weapon you are using.

D: the delay modifier of the special attack you are using.

P: Your character personal weapon speed modifier. For example, a +30 rifle speed modifier.

Ok...it's not complicated but it's tedious. I wonder how some people actually find the time to do these calculations...

Fortunately, the article comes with a nifty little program that actually does this calculation automatically across ALL special moves. Unfortunately, the value of M (Damage Modifier of the special attack used) is only known for 5 professions i.e. TKM, Rifle, Pistol, Carbiner and Pikeman.

How to use this program?

a) Just insert the damage values of our weapon, after adjustments for mitigation if you are calculating for a PvP environment.

b) Insert your speed modifier (after adjustments for additional modifiers like tapes and plates if you are calculating your personal dps).

c) Select your weapon class. The program will generate a table for DPS values across all special moves.

d) The program, of course, assumes that your target is AR0. If, however, you are comparing combat against a higher AR weapon, as in TKM vs Pikeman, simply add the 25% to damage per AR difference to the higher weapon. If both are armoured in composite, then reduce both weapons damage rangesby 25%. Then again, I have been called a moron on these boards, so I'm not sure if this is correct. Would much appreciate it if someone would verify this.

e) Once you have generated the table for your specific weapon, simply multiply by (1 - the special protection rating) of the armour you may be up against. Eg.should your opponent be wearing 80% kinetic armour, then the DPS on the table should be multiplied by (1 - 0.8) or 0.2 in this example. This should give you a true picture of the "real damage" you areactually doing.

At this point, some of you who may have been following my arguments may have come to some similar conclusions as I have...

1) If the value of the damage modifier, M, is unknown for some combat professions, how then can someone ever do a fair comparison? There is a great difference between M=1 and M=2.5, for example. Hence, unless the value of M is clarified, the term "base damage"will have little relation to "real damage". Without this value, the DPS of a class or weapon can only be implied.

2) The value of M is known for TKM's armed with VK's. As the table clearly shows, the implication that TKM's have a DPS of 350 across ALL special moves is clearly false.Even though the posters in question are careful to use the term "base damage" all the time, point 1) above refutes the validity of this comparison.

I take no credit for the paper itself other than having found it. Should anyone know the source of the missing damage modifier values, please do contact the author so that he may improve on his program. Should somebody want to refute the maths, I also suggest that you contact the author.

If the personal weapon speed modifier (P), is +100, then you are dividing by zero.

Correct. And that is why, there is a cap to speed at 1.0 secs.

Read the article. It also draws out the graph of the relationship between the speed modifier and attack speed. The graph clearly shows that if a cap were not applied, and your speed modifier were +100, your attack speed would be infinity.

Lets PLUG some figures in shall we? can you use the software like a good little imbecylle?

Can you?

good girl

here we go.

TKM with dmg modifier 46-180 2.2 115 speed mod or 296-430, MITIGATED To 296-350

MHS With Powerhammer 3.1 152-452 75 Speed Mod Or 152-272, AP difference with vk= 190-340

BTW My swordsman friends, many of you who are as braindead as TKM, for daring to call me naive to have such a powerhammer with such 'low stats'

6.0 1029 =171

5.4 727= 134

I wield the best non looted, so piss off!

Lets plug the numbers in Unarmedhit3= 1292 DPS

Now their is no swordsman calculation, but you can use the carbine calculation burstshot2 with swordsman data for the DPS, for it is also a 4xDMG hit at 2.5 time modifier, just like two hand hit3- giving a DPS of 547

Learn a little better before coming at me with your small arsenal of complete bull

Tired of this arguments is he...yet sure he is to respond to...

Not so tired thinks me...

Please provide documentary evidence that the damage modifier of burstshot 2 is equal to the damage modifier of a swordsman...

If you cannot provide such documentary evidence, pleasethen provide the reasoning behind the logic that carbine burstshot 2 is equal to the damage modifier of a swordsman...

Please also provide your clear reasoning why mitigation cannot be precalculated and inserted into the formula, as my original post suggested.

If you do not understand the requests above, please enrol in a suitable language class of your level, or, mature to a level of understanding that will allow you to understand the requests above...

Oh yes, and Tom...with regards to your power-hammer, actually you right, at least insofar as the theoretical calculations indicate. I actually did the calculation myself, though I was rather worried at first considering, as you have so elequently put it, wanting intellect...

Perhaps in future, I should select my speed sliced hammers...

The ranged professions dmg potential has been changed since the strategy guide, these new numbers are found on the very site you mentioned, and through asking any carbineer. The Melee prrofession numbers have not changed, and indeed Pikeman have reported the book is not in error, they do not have a 4x attack even at master, as printed. The attack for two hand hit 3 is a 4x attack at 2.5 delay modifier.

Mitigation is dependent on ones opponent.

At mitigation Level 1- 20% of your dmg range is reduced from your output

At Mitigation Level 2- 40%

At Mitigation Level 3- 60%

The formulae calculates an aggregate DPS, the highest possible DPS is actually the maximum dmg of the weapon/adjusted speed. Adjusted speed is the delay modifier X base speed X(100-Your speed/100).

At mitigation level 3 you would take 60% from the dmg RANGE of my weapon

152-452 300 Difference, 60% of that is 180, 452-180= 272

46-180 134 Difference, 60% of that is 80. 180-80=100

TKM Get a Dmg Modifier of 250 which cannot be mitigated, brining their dmg range to 296-350

With Ap 2 against VK ap1= 272X1.25=340, less than 350, it is then impossible, even with skill tapes striking at once per second to surpass TKM DPS.

Just as designed

sigh

Yes...yes...taken directly from the player guides on this site. We have all read them...

Can you please post the location of the exact data for damage modifiers you frequently refer to so that we can also peruse it? Since not all of us have a stragegy guide? And also how the pikemen have measured their damage modifiers so that they can definitely say that their modifiers have not been changed? I find it strange that the author of the article and the program provided does not have such a reference, or does not use the strategy guide as a reference.

Tome I thought you said in another thread that the devs told you to "take it elsewhere"

please do

let us have our conversations about TKA

like we have been telling you for what seems like a year now

go to the swordsmen board and get your profession fixed

please TKA is finally where is should be

so quit trying to screw it up

*sigh*

I tell ya I am really REALLY starting to get sick of this crap

at first it was kinda entertaining but now I just want to kill someone
