Thread: Idea on making TKAs better at doing what the devs want, tanking.

I had a thought, and posted this in the thread that holo was posting in, http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=Development&message.id=323556#M323556

I think a skill that gives a temporary buff to our HAM would be a great way to increase our tanking abilities.

A skill in the Meditation line that buff's by say, 500 at level 1, with a 500 point increase for each level past it, maxing at a 2500 increase at Master TKA.

The drawback would be, massive mind wounds and fatigue. What do you all think?

This would be cool for us, but to be honest, all melee professions should be equal in their abilities to tank. TKA is very near and dear to my heart, but we are not the only melee profession in SWG. HAM bonuses sound like a good idea, but how would this be implemented fairly?

i think it would be fair just to give all MELEE classes some kind of boost in armor. like we get so much damage reduction in battle compared to gunman. as in implement it in the skills. such as melee armor + or soemthing.

heh, had to rain on my parade eh?

Hmmm... it wouldn't make sense to give that to all melee classes.

Well, lets look at the ways a class can tank.

1. More HAM

2. More evades

3. More Damage reduction

Now, we could spread that out across the 4 classes.

This could lead into the idea of the "uber-tank" where you could take3 of the elite melee classes (possible with 4 skill points to spare) to get the defensive bonus from three of them. Which could be good or bad, depending on your perspective.

I read something else on one of the other posts (TKA board has never been so alive, lol) saying that perhaps our views of TKA's are skewed. TKA is not a tank, and was never meant to be. His argument was that martial artists don't take damage if they can avoid it, they block, parry, etc. So, if I was given the job of fixing melee in SWG, I suppose the thing to do would be to dump these three skills on TKA, spread out over the branches. I seem to recall saying this a while back, but I'm not about to go digging right now.

So let's say things work like this now: TKA's get all the skills of the other professions. They will now get bonuses to dodge (Fencer skill), counterattack (Swordsman skill), and block (Pikeman skill). However to keep all of melee in balance with each other, these bonuses should be small in comparison to their related melee profession. Let's say 30%. So now the TKA (read Master TKA) has +20 to dodge, counterattack, and block, and the other professions get a most welcome boost of their primary defense up to around +70 at master level.

This will make TKA's more the martial artists that they're supposed to be, and will boost all of melee in a way that doesn't involved giving players more HAM. The actual numbers may need to be worked with, but I've read on the Fencer boards that even at Master level, they don't seem to be doing much dodging, so the +20 will help, but may not be as game breaking as it may originally seem.

Aren't TKAs trained to kill Jedi's in the novels or something?

What? You think you're some kind of Jedi, waving your hand around like that?

The TKA's job as I understand it, was to keep Jedi in check. I don't think they were specifically assassins..

Any other ideas on my defensive suggestions?

I personally never saw TKA's as tanks, but Holocron himself said thats what they wanted us to be.

Honestly I would much prefer losing our toughness stat all together, in exchange for greatly increased evades.

I look at us like the Assassin class from Ragnarok Online. Fast, lower damage. Really really low defense. Excessively high evasion.

So, perhaps an evasion buff? (if evades even work, my experience playing would seem like no.)
