Many people speak of getting lines in tka for defense mods suck as meele/ranged defense and defense vs knockdown/dizzy etc. However some people argue that the defense mods only work while unarmed. Does anyone know for sure if the tka defense mods work while unarmed only or with a ranged weapon equipped as well.

There's a bit of debate on this. I have not personally tested it, but I believe the following to be true.

Defensive mods that specifically say "unarmed" like Unarmed Toughness and (on TC) Unarmed Center of Being, do not stack with other defensive bonuses.

However, defensive bonuses that are non-specific, such as defense against knockdown, melee defense, etc, do stack with mods from different professions.

Actually, i've been led to believe (and have no been discredited in this either) that if a mod is gained in a specific skill tree, it does not stack with the same mod in another skill tree. Ex: Dodge mods in pistoleer do not stack with Dodge mods in Fencer. They DO stack in the "my skill mods" menu thingie, but they do not actually apply to in-game.

Things like unarmed toughness, however, would be an auto-matic no-stack. Unarmed toughness and melee toughness are two separate wordings, and therefore mods.

EoZ I don't know just how true that is per se....

The example I'm thinking of is Bounty Hunters going into the pistoleer tree for the mods and specials....

Why don't you go and fight a BH with pistol line + pistoleer and watch him spam the slowest pistol special (stopping shot for example) with any speed pistol at 1 shot per second....that should answer you pretty quick

(master pistoleer = +74 pistol speed....BH pistol 4+master pistoleer = +135 pistol speed)
