Thread: TKA and armor ?
Ahhh I always get a kick out of these threads. :-)
At unarmed IV I was soloing Huurton Howler missions. Unarmed IV. Without doctor buffs, or food, or a pet. Just my alt, using berzerk, my 72% kinetic ubese armor, and stim b's (novice medic). 3.8k unarmed experience each. I love how people will buy junk armor, try it out without buffs, or good slices, etc and assume that all armor is useless :-P Getting kited by nyms, nightsistersor jedi initiates? You better have encumberence sliced composite on a hotkey or you'll be dead in a few shots (or one). Fighting kinetic dealing mobs? My suit of enc sliced advanced ubese absorbs 86% of incoming damage for mobs with AP 0 attacks (most mobs). Maybe that's not a big deal when you're out fighting krahbu, but if you want to fight difficult mobs that turns a tough fight for an unarmored person into an easy fight for me with my armor on. Sharnoff Bull whacking you in the head for 600 damage? My armor absorbs 516 of that, and 84 gets through. That means instead of it killing me in potentially two rounds (if they're both to the same pool) the bull will need to hit me 12 times, at near their max damage, to the same pool for me to die. But I can stim myself, and random pool attacks favor health/action, so my mind isn't going down that much. With armor on I can last against packs of mobs where one of them alone would be a tough fight without armor.
I've been flying through the TKA ranks (For the second time with my alt, did it on Rorrak back in the day before I dropped it for Master Smuggler) using nothing but berzerk & armor to take out huurton huntresses, over and over. 4.1-4.3k exp each, why it's variable I have no idea but it's good experience however you slice it.And they're a lot easier than pickets. If I wanted to spam specials, no problem, I'd drink a breath of heaven and raise my 3 special move cost substats up higher than they were when I was unarmored, so my specials would actually cost less.
This game is made to be *interdependant* A lot of people don't understand that. There are tradeoffs to every choice you make. In this case it's the encumberence of armor. I'm blocking 86% of damage of AP 0 kinetic damage with my ubese. Against hard hitting mobs that means I'm blocking 100s of damage a round. Are you really doing *that* much damage to yourself via specials? If you are you're really doing something wrong. Armor makes you tremendously harder to kill, unless of course you try to just use it alone, or use poorly made stuff, etc etc. You need to get it sliced. You need to look at what specials you're doing, and if they're really necessary to kill the mob, and how you can raise your stats to spam to your hearts content (Breath of Heaven, Tat Sunburn are good ones to look at).
If you want to be the best TKA you can be, you use armor, plain and simple. You have it macro'd to only put it on exactly when you need it, so it doesn't affect your regen. You use it in combination with a +injury/wound undershirt if you've got medic to max that out. You make sure you're getting good sliced pieces.
To really be decked out to maximum effect you need an armorsmith, a BE (injury/wound tissues or melee defense/stun tissues), a Tailor, a Smuggler (Slices and muon), a Chef (Fishak, Sunburn, Breath of Heaven, etc), a Weaponsmith (VKs are situational but have a use for every TKA), a Master Artisan (vehicle), a CH (mount). If you're trying to say "I use teh ub3r VK unsliced and dontt ware armor cause iz teh suxx0rz!1!!!!11!!!!11!" Then that's cool :-) It's your perogative. But it's honestly amazing to see what you can do when you say "OK, the game is meant to be interdependant, if I want to really kick ass I have to take advantage of what these other professions can offer me in combination"
Doctor Buffs & PB & Muon & Fishak (yes I know they don't affect the boost anymore, they still raise your mind stats a lot though) & Armor & nice VK, all sliced, with kickass stim b's and an injury/wound treatment undershirt on...you're a beast, plain and simple.
By not wearing armor, you are choosing to take 714.28% more damage than me versus AP 0, kinetic dealing targets (Almost all melee mobs) Take a long look at that number. Now just through taking one drink of BoH, my substats which affect special moves are all raised up *higher than they were without my armor* And of course you have your armor macro'd so you can take it on/off so it doesn't affect your regen between fights. So with just one drink, I negated all the drawbacks of armor, but you're still taking 714.28% more damage than I am. I wonder who's making the better choice...

Armor is a choice. Do you need it? No Is it helpful? Absolutely.
The above post mentioned a 86% reduction in dmg. So for any creature mobs, the only dmg you really have to worry about is the dmg you do to yourself with specials.
The same goes for buffs. Do you need them? No Are they helpful? Yes
This one just goes to the point if you think you should be able to tank 4-5 lvl 30-40 creatures with no problems.
Most of the posts in this forum saying a TKA is overpowered is someone with full buffs and a 70%+ suit of composite. You regen almost as fast as dmg is taken and in some cases faster. This is something you don't usually need for ranged because you rarely get hit. But for melee you get hit all the time. Using armor is definatly easier, but if your looking for a challenge try it without and maybe without VKs as well. The most powerful TKA will always be one with buffs and armor, it just depends if you think you need to go that far. I personally like to just beat the crap out of things with my char and have fun talkign with friends and not having to worry if I'm going to die in 2 seconds.
here is the easy answer...
If you do not have balance two - wear armor
If you need healing more than 2 times in a fight - wear armor
if you have no healing abilities - wear armor
if you do not intend to spam specials - wear armor
if you intend to spam specials but are not buffed - do NOT wear armor
if you intend to spam specials and are buffed - wear armor
if you are not a wookie - wear armor
I stopped wearing armor about the time I hit Master. I use intimidate2, warcry2, and knockdown/dizzy as damage and croud control. If something gets out of hand then I go down quick. Even though I dont use armor much at all it is only because I want to learn to deal with extreme situations so I dont become dependent on it. But I am no fool... I have a full set of advanced Ubese in my bag and a full set of Composite in my bank.
Find yourself a good 50% or higher resist to kenetic armor to level with. You will wear it out around master level. Chunk it and get a suit worthy of a Master TK. I like the advanced Ubese for MOBs and Composite for PvP. Keep the composite in the bank so it suffers no condition loss on death (comp isnt cheap).
To NOT use armor is arrogant.
Good post Rorrak.
I would like to add: Use your specials wisely. If something doesn't go down in a few KDs, stop wasting your time, start debuffing it. Int, blind, stun etc.
and like miloZEP said. if you like to spam specials, don't use armor. unless you are buffed. ![]()
I almost always wear my armor, the amount of dmg i take is sort of funny. Watching the 20s and 30s float above my head from a Rancoris always nice to see. With the % that is craftable on adv ubese now (75% kineticis what i have, mixed with a stun/def undershirt and bando or a int/warcy undershirt) it's a little foolish to pass it up. I am not buffed and eat no spice/food80% of the time. I usually don't need it, powerboost is enough. Of course i have my handy sidekicks but generally, I'M taking the dmg.
I used 66% kinetic ubese up until TKM
I stopped using most of it after that -- I'm still wearing my ubese boots & gloves, but mainly because I like how they look.
I've got a full set of 4 piece clothing (only wearing 3 pieces now currently) with BE enhancements +13 stun def, +4 melee def. so with the outfit, I have another +25 stun def (current cap) and +12-16 melee defense.
that plus the +25 wound & injury treatment cloths in this outfit and my high end stim b's, I'm usually fine unless I get hit for 1k+ in a single shot... even then I don't always get incapped.
I stopped using the armor simply because I still will occasionally wear my VKs (for FS things on dant, or big creature type things) and with eating some foods, I can spam UH3 with them at a minor cost -- this is a very good thing.
that and with the new decay, I'm saving my armor for special occasions and certain big fights... I see no point in running my armor down in condition and risk destroying it while repairing it when I can survive the fights without it.
is it arrogant of me to not wear armor anymore? feel free to think so...but it's working well for me and I'm going to stick with it. I managed tosolo 3 separate groups of3 untrained wielders of the dark side in the force crystal caves on dant last night, so say what you will...
i'm not offended at all actually... i didn't mean for it to come out as defensive, but if it did... there isn't much i can do about it with the lack of an edit button
and the armoractually isn'tin my bag anymore, a friend is using it, but since I'm notPvPing currently,i doubt i'llhave much use for it in the near future.. that's the one benefit of wearing clothing only, if i die and it decays a bit, its not a big deal.
We can still do amazing things without armor.. like those untrained wielders of the dark side..
But throw on a 75% kinetic ubese set, some buffs and some food, and I've tanked 4 Force crystal hunters before (medium armor 80% all resist ones). Try doing that without armor heh. One time hunting them.. just on a solo one.. one of them found a hole in my armor.. did a special on me for 2800. Ouch!
yeah... i ran into 2 of those after, i figured i'd use em to send me to the nearest cloning center, but for some reason only 1 of em fought when i attacked. the second went after some guy's pets so i managed to live.
all i know is that melee mitigation is my new best friend
i think the caves were a bit screwed up last night, nothing would agro on me or one of the other guys who was walking through
