In a way. What it does is gives you a chance to either Dodge, Block or Counterattack.

If you dodge then you take no damage from the attack, if you block you get an extra reduction to the damage taken, maybe as high as 50%?, & if you counter attack you do an auto-attack back at them.

Though as said before it isn't half as effective of the defence of any of the other melee proffesions, but hey, every little helps.
