Although rifle may not be that effective when dabbling if you plan on using the rifle, you could still dabble in some defenses. His post was titled "What rifleman tree would best compliment my TK skills?", so the only rifle skills that would do that are the defenses. Pick up the melee and ranged defenses. Just don't plan on shooting your rifle in PvP and use your TK skills. With just TK and those rifleman defenses, you shouldn't notice any difference when they cap things, you should still fall under the cap. Although my guess is they'll probably end up lowering the rifle defenses sometime in the future.

Whew, maybe, but I sure think there are more efficient ways to pick up defenses without using 20 skill points in rifle. The Grips line, or Techniques line, or Stances line in Pistoleer for example. (yes, you get the same + to melee from the Stances line, but you pick up Dodge at Novice which could be built upon with food/drink/attachments...quite handy) Although if you like rifle, and already have the experience points anyway, by all means go grab some of the defenses (Concealment or Abilities line)...but, like Skel said, definitely don't expect to use the rifle effectively.

I was a master carbineer for a while and I found the ranged knockdown to be very effective, in fact, it is one for the few carbineer skills that really does well.

I could envision a macro that instantly switches to a carbine weapon and triggers a ranged knockdown, then re-equips knuckler or just bare fists again to help prevent a tk from being kited so much.
