Stand alone? Hmmm... probably not. However, it is a GREAT profession for mixed crafter/combat people. Innate armor will help those people greatly.
Add in master swords and some medic or doc (or heck, go for the tripple mastery and get fencer) and you have aVERY viable PvE combat toon (PvP still needs tweaking as a CM using paralyze or another ranged prof using roots and snares can cause big problems).
Using sword specials while UNARMED (i.e. no knucklers at all) does a decent amount of damage and allows you to spam specials pretty much non-stop. When you don't have a weapon equipped, your specials use very little action, meaning you can keep dealing increased damage amounts long after yourarmed friends have run out of action.

If you wanna play with the level 80 big boys...no, I don't think TKM by itself is viable. It looks like the game's no longer designed that way anyway, you wanna have the biggest bang for your credit, you need to take up another profession or two to accomodate it.
However, in the lower weight class (what would it be, level 56?), I'd say it's completely viable. Just steer clear of those level 59 and above

love tkm as stand alone combat profession!
master tkm, master artisan, master weaponsmith.
i wear no armour, no weapons, master weaponsmith is posted over my name and everyone knows i have vendors too. if it wasn't for the nice bright circle advertising my combat level to actually be 54, i would be having much more fun in pvp!
its a damn shame our levels are advertised and almost unethical. sony's just lucky this is a game world. i don't want my character advertised on my server with exactly who i am. that information should be hidden and he/she should have to figure that out themselves upon cloning.

TKM is still amazing. Doesnt require a weapon or armor which means two less money sinks.
Having the best defenses in-game makes usthe most adaptive profession. In the future when we come across uber weapons (for example the ROTW reward for completing the Rryatt trail), we can have the best of both worlds. An uber weapon + uber defenses = a prof that deals fairly decent damage that can also take large amounts of damage.
TKM is good just by itself. Add some nice weapons to the fray and you got a really solid profession with really no weaknesses at all.
