I hit novice about two days ago, and now I'm killing red cons like they were nothing.
If you have any bleed shots, use them first, then close in.
Make sure whatever you're going after is either alone, or doesn't pack.
Use status attacks in bigger fights, if you can - you'd be amazed what Intimidate and Berserk can do. With a good VK, the extra HAM cost is more than worth it.
Don't be afraid to retreat if things start going sour.
With just that, you can solo some reds without too much trouble.
However, if you're going to be going after them on a regular basis, definitely pick up some armor. Ubese is great against most creatures, but keep in mind it's near-useless against ranged attacks. Buffs and food are a great help as well.
With a set of Ubese armor, I can take down any creature on Tatooine without buffing. Sure, I can get taken down if I get ganked by a dozen cannibal dewbacks, but for two or three opponents, I have little trouble. That said, I get my ass handed to me against several NPCs. Desert Demon Marksmen are hit or miss, and Tuskens are instand death if they use a rifle. Such is the peril of TK and the weakness of Ubese. You're great against kinetic and melee attacks, but avoid gunfights.
Oh, and a huge yes to VKs from me - they lose some effectiveness at higher levels, but the speed and damage increase more than outpaces the special move cost. More often than not, I can take things down without using any special moves, other than the occasional status attack I talked about earlier.

Oh, and I got Balance first, then the first two Power levels. I'm not sure where I'll go from there. Your mileage may vary.

Pick up drugs, Tatooine Sunburns are great, Muon Gold is good for a pinch, and Neutron Pixies are my new best friend, but beware the spices, they each have a downer, and it hurts, it will get you incapped if it goes while you are fighting, especially the neutron pixie. I am 0/1/1/1 in TK and soloed a Rogue Fambaa last night with no problem whatsoever, I had a 26% comp chestplate, and 40% comp gloves and boots, took 1 drink of Tatooine Sunburn and kicked the crap out of it.

KD then use warcry to keep them down for 10 secs. Note that warcry does take a large chunk of health/action.
