Thread: What exactly does defense acuity do?

I believe that is what it is called (Our dodge/block/counterattack variant in the combat xp column). I have read the decription about a hundred times and am not sure what they are trying to say.

Does it mean it assits in the use of dodge/etc or does it does it negate it in some way? Clueless really. I often think SOE gets someone in their staff whoknows english as a far secondto their firstto write some of the skill explainations.

It increases your chances of your dodge/counterattack/block etc to acually work...and yes it works.

it would work if we actually got dodge/counter/block skills. at present, it's more helpful to Fencers and Swordsmen than to TKs.

Technically, it increases the chance of making a successful dodge, counterattack, or block, but only if you're either unarmed or armed with a VK. However, once that is determined, the game sees that you're not using a weapon that enables dodge, counterattack, or block, and nullifies the result. (You can only dodge if you're using a 1-hand weapon or pistol, you can only block if you're using a pole-arm or rifle, and you can only counterattack if you're using a 2-hander or carbine.)

End result: Defensive Acuity does NOTHING.

DA doesnt do anything noticeable to me atm...

my combat logs never ever register a dodge or counter or (rofl) block... nor do they say "XXXX shoots at you and misses because of your DA...

Just one more thing fencers and swordsmen have up on us, though they no longer have a dot so to speak...

Sure we do, it's been tested any number of times. Find a TKM/Fencer or TKM/Pistoleer. Have him/her start fighting with a pistol or sword in-hand, and log the dodges. Then switch to VK and log them. You'll see a very noticable rate of dodging when they have a pistol or sword equipped, but when they use unarmed, you will NEVER see so much as a single dodge, block, or counterattack. The applies to everyone, really - everyone has a small chance to use each secondary defense, but the one you are allowed to use is determined by the weapon you have equipped.

I think the easiest thing to do would be to enable unarmed and VK's to trigger all types of defense, but I have a feeling they are using an option group set up to allow only a single type, and I know from experience that converting that in a program this size can be a nightmare. Yes, even something this small - you're still looking at a base-level and thus ground-up re-write.

It must be doing something. I believe it sometimes lets you block/counterattack/dodge. I've seen several times in my Combat Log that I Counterattacked while fighting unarmed and I do not have that skill from any other profession.

I don't think it's accurate to say that it does nothing. I can pretty reliably note a dodge/counterattack/block manuever shortly after using "center of being" which should temporarily enhance that modifier. Like Cob does for the secondary defenses of other melee classes.

Granted I only ever see that result happen once or twice in my combat log........

In short it's working, but due to various game dynamics there is no gain to be had from it, and due to that it's otherwise worthless. hehe. It's so usefull it might as well not exist.

At any rate forget about what it does, it doesn't matter.
