Master Pistoleer here: Wondering which Melee profession to do: TKA or Fencer?
Yes, I know this is the TKA board, so I will most likely get theTKA response. I will put this on the Fencer board too hehe. But I was wondering:
I have Master Pistoleer (ok almost. 3/4/4/4) and I want to do a Melee profession too. I have been visiting the TKA and Fencer boards for a week now, just reading, not posting, and need to ask you all something.
Since I am a Master Pistoleer, would it be smart to stack Dodge, and Defenses?
Or should I go TKA for nice/fast, and for the Meditation Tree (and also Head Hit in TKA)?
(and I have been a TKA before, and it was insanely fun once I got novice.)
Just wondering if you could help me. =)
If your looking for a defensive template, than fencer is the way to go. Most of your defenses will stack, and you will be very hard to hit. However, TKA can also be just as valuable. The defenses arent quite as good, but meditation is a real goody and something that I dont know if I could live without anymore. You'll also do better damage as a TKA and get the added bonus of being able to take dirty fighting from smuggler if you so choose. The smuggler specials are by far better than anything you'll find in pistoleer, so this may be the path to take. In the end, its ultimately just a matter of personal taste. Both proffessions will compliment you well, so take whichever one you think you will enjoy more.
Going fencer will give you great defenses along with pistoleer defenses. However, going TKA will be more cost effective if you decide to take the dirty fighting line out of smuggler and you do get to self heal wounds, bleeds, poisons, and diseases. Plus, lets not forget center of being for the extra HAM in heavy fights.
They both will be effective. One makes you a defensive juggernaut, while the other... since I am partial to TKA, speaks for itself.

well all i can say is it seems like TKA/pistoleer is the new flavor of the month... There defences stack and with CoB its almost impossible to hit a TKA/pistoleer. I don't know if this is true or not but another poster stated that he saw a fencer take on 5 TKM's at once.... they thought he was crazy but because of CoB they coul'nt touch him... he dodged and blocked everything
Er... pistoleer dodge does not stack with TKA defenses. Just fencer's dodge.
Fencer. It's really a no brainer for someone that is playing a pistoleer. Your dodges stack, your bleeds stack, and both these professions have the highest modifiers for resistance verse knockdown/dizzy. Fencer damage is lower than all of the other melee professions due to it's armor peircing, but that is similar to how pistols compare with other ranged professions. If PVP is your interest. This template will do you well. Your defense is insane, and you have alot of options at hand. Keep in mind you have stun damage at ranged (tangle pistol), and in melee (stun baton).
TKA is a powerhouse in melee. It also has several other abilities that make it an interesting profession to play. Not to mention if you do choose to grab smuggler and the dirty fighting line. You will already have the unarmed four requirement. The suck thing is that defense acurity will not work while holding a pistol. Likewise, your dodge rating will be meaningless (as dodge only applies while holding a pistol or 1h melee weapon) while going unarmed. So you give up alot of defense, for harder hitting kinetic only damage.
It's a tough choice.

I assume you meant Fencer/Pistoleer. This month that is probably the most effective combo. TKA/pistoleer is nice but you don't get the double-bonus of dodge and it appears that pistoleer dodge only works when holding a pistol when you don't have any melee dodge stat.
If this is a long term decision, pick whichever looks the most fun. if you want the most powerful template 'till a patch reshuffles the deck- that would be Fencer right now to complement your other skills.
