I have always wondered that myself. Pants work better, no needing to stretch that dress to do a kick to somebody's head.

A longer skirt allows for more breathing room and freedom of movement,as do most robes from martial arts attire. Or maybe that is just my hetero side trying to justify wearing a dress

it may look like a full robe on alot of martial artists, but alot of those robes have a seperate leg clothing. my wushu/tai chi chuan uniform has alot of breathing room for a two piece, and the shaolin wore robes, yet had pants aswell....robe was too long to easily see them.
