Thread: Concern: Number of Items and the Viability of Stat Clothing
This is something I'd say a lot of tailors (and apparently a lot of developers) haven't ever given much thought to, because by the nature of our profession we don't tend to worry about this sort of thing, but with the fixes coming up in the next major publish I think it bears discussing...
Stat-enhanced tissues and (in particular) socketed enhancers have the capability to create some real high-end sets of clothing that gives boosts that rival or exceed the benefits or some armor with no real drawback. This is a matter all to itself, though, as my concern is with a much tighter category: the dearth of options for someone looking to get the most from their clothes, statistically speaking.
Every item that can have sockets has a maximum of four available sockets. What's the problem with this? Some items take up more "wearable slots" than other items. A Grand Ball Gown, for instance, takes up the space normally reserved for a shirt, jacket, pants, and backpack/bandoleer. The bodysuits are similar (except that they don't use the backpack slot). The problem? These items have the exact same potential number of sockets, despite taking up multiple locations.
For a character interested in getting the most out of his clothes, this means there's only one viable ensemble: hat, shirt, jacket/duster, gloves, belt, backpack, pants, and boots. You know, the exact friggin outfit most of us are already complaining we're tired of seeing/selling...
I would really like to see this addressed before the patch goes live. Increase the number of potential sockets for "multi-slot" items. They'll still lag behind a bit in terms of bio-enhancement, but because there are only a limited number of bio-enhancement bonuses (and most of them aren't things people need a heap of), that's just not as much of a concern.
That's true - but I really don't want to see Missy Twinkletoes out fighting in a grand ball gown.
And if she does - I hope if falls to shreds at her feet soon as she gets hit.
The only 'practical' clothing this involves really are jumpsuits - those cover a lot of territory as well and preclude a few other items of clothing - the dresses I wouldn't worry too much about.
Yes, it has a pretty big impact on anything in the Bodysuits category. This includes Infiltration Suits, Tactical Skinsuits, and Fighter's Flightsuits; all things that by their name alone seem to suggest they'd be something a person would wear into combat. Kind of ironic that they're going to be the worst "combat clothing" in the game, then...
I was really starting to like the trend toward Orange Fighter's Flightsuits (among Rebels) and brightly-colored Tactical Skinsuits/Trader's Flightsuits (among everyone), too. I'm afraid a lot of the market for these items will die as players who are primarily interested in what stats their clothing can give switch to the standard "blackhole" duster-with-accessories ensemble.
Well - it all depends on if they get stacking working properly - and what if any practical cap there is going to be on the player.
All the flight suits take a LOT of cloth, if stacking is working properly - you can get a considerable number of bio bonuses in there - and how many more are available - or what a player will need is yet to be seen for the sockets.
Actually, there is an option people haven't considered. It isn't the whole basic shirt/trouser/jacket thing people don't like. But the black duster outfit. Imagine if people wore more of the types of shirt etc available in the game, and in other colours. That black-duster wearer might well change their outfit to an interesting shade of blue, if offered a high stat outfit in that colour. It could be a chance to broaden what people wear, rather than set it in stone. If the stats are all they care about, it will change what they wear.
If they aren't so keen on the stats, they'll wear their favourite flightsuit reguardless.
I'm not too concerned about this atm. I'm more concerned about the fact that there seem to be very few enhancements that I can drop into those 4 sockets. I think I've actually had 2 drop for me since release. Those sockets are useless without enhancements in them.

Hey! Sometimes I put in on a pretty dress, get out my one-handed sword and fight monsters just for the humor value!
