Just made Master, and dang - that's a lot of new colors to go with a lot of new schematics!

I was wondering - does anybody have useful naming conventions for the various Tailoring colors that they'd like to share?

I may have boxed myself in a little, but I guess I'm probably more or less OK. But the Tailoring III colors have pretty much staked their claims to being called just "Blue" and "Green," for example, so "greater" and "lesser" versions need some other name or modifier. I'm debating just calling the super-bright Master Tailor colors "Xtreme Blue (XBlu for short)" and "Xtreme Red (XRed.)" I hear that Xtreme stuff is really popular with the kids today....

Ok, here's what I do...it looks silly, but tells me exactly what color I'm working with:

Each range has 7 shades to it. These I term:

1. Light (lt.)


2. Dk LIght


3. Lt Med


4. Med


5. Dk Med


6. Lt Dark


7. Dark

For the color names themselves, you note the big problem. How do I make the third blue I have sound different from the fourth, AND remember which is which? My answer? Blue1, Blue2, Blue3, Blue4. :-) So the darkest of the Master Blues would be (Dk Blue4) on my naming scheme. A medium tailor3 blue would be (Med Blue3). :-) Note that the numbers are not the skill box where they're earned, but just which of the ranges, listed top to bottom, that I'm using. Red, for instance, has 5 ranges. (Blue probably does to, but it's so faint as to be useless, IMO. :-)

I'd love to sit down and label each range someday.....but free time is a rare thing atm. :-P Hope that helps.

I've done similar things to that, though my color scheme generally proceeds from the presumption of using the "Dark"est color, so only exceptions to that would be noted (e.g., LtBlu, MedGrn, etc.)

Where particular precision is needed, I've occasionally used numbering to indicate which lighter variant I'm using for an item - e.g. Grn5Blk would be your "Dk Med" Green with Black trim.

The only thing I don't like about using numbers for the ranges is that while it's decent for the tailor, it doesn't communicate much to the customer.

One thing I thought up that I hope will help people, is a "rack" of Ribbed Shirts in various colors, with their item names showing how that color would be referred to. For example, for the first green, "Pale Green (PGrn for short), may be just "Green/Grn" on older items."

(Another problem there - that I didn't fully think through my color names from the start, so I had to "phase out" some of them, but sold items are probably floating around with the old names....)

I'm working on a method of exact colors - but it's not done yet.

At the moment, most of my stock I stick to several standard colors, long as the naming conventions match - folks are happy.

The brightest blue is Sapphire.

The midrange red is Coral.

The most intense green is Emerald.

The new red I call Crimson.

The red we used to have (although I believe it changed a hair) is Scarlet.

The new orange/red I call Tangerine.

The flourescent new purple I call Ultraviolet.

And of course black and white are standards.

That's about 8 standard stocking colors which covers what I usually get calls for and I find sales much better if they can use a name that matches pieces. It's also a good reference point since it's mostly the darker of the shades to talk about lighter etc.
