I have two very similar questions:
1. If I want to make a factory run of something that requires a single sub component or multiple sub components but not identical, can I put crates of the sub components in the ingredient hopper or do I have to unpack them first?
2. If I want to make a factory run of something that requires identical sub components can I put crates of the sub components in the ingredient hopper or do I have to unpack them first?
I hope that made some sense =\
Thanks for taking the time to read this =] Happy weaving.

I've never done this for clothing, but I have done this for pharma products, so yes, you can just put the crates in.

I've made crates of bounty hunter and spec ops packs using crates of cargo pockets in the ingredient hopper. Since the factory fixes, I have had no trouble just sticking the crates in the input hopper and starting it up.
What I have yet to try is something that requires more than one type of crated component, like reinforced pants. Multiple crated components was always a big stumper when mass producing meds. Since drawing from multiple crates seems to be working fine with stimpacks, I would think it is fixed for clothing as well.

OK, I've run PSG's thru my factory, which require 6 different sub-assemblies, and I was able to put all the crates in and run them thru. So as long as the crates match your schematic (by serial #) you're fine.
