personally I would encourage you to find a player city with decent traffic, but that's just me

I'd say, sell your wares where your customers are. If you want to sell to the general public and do a higher volume of sales in general, set up outside Theed or Coronet. That's where tons of customers are *already* at! If you want to sell to members of your player town, set up there. I would certainly advise against dragging your business down in an effort to support any PC town by setting up there (Sorry Pappi, I hate *most* player towns).
...but, go with your gut. If it's not working, you can always move.

Hi! I'm a new tailor who is planning to place a house soon and open up a clothing shop. My question is: Where is the best place to do this? More specifically, will I do better putting my shop down as close as I can to a major city like Theed, or would I do better in an established player city?
Also, just out of curiosity, any opinions on which planet tailors seem to do the best business?
Thanks!

hey im master tailor on Chimaera and my vendors are based in my guild hall at the moment tho im working thru merchant to try and get them on the map. I pretty much only sell stuff to my guild members as we are based on dantooine and its quite remote for ppl to get to. This is why outside theed or coronet are better but you cant just place a house anywhere, u might need zoning rights and all that bumph. id reckon corellia was the best planet just cos its probably the busiest. Im sticking in dant with my guild tho cos we are growing and if i ever build up a loyal customer base then im sure my clothes would sell but theyre not really atm. The bazaar is always good tho, i sell things really fast on there.

You could set up outside of Mos Eisley and cater to the newbies!
My best shop (most traffic and sales) was when I was set up outside of Coronet. If you can find a decent spot, I would recommend Coronet or Theed over a player city unless you are sure that the player city will maintain its size (important for the shuttle, if it's away from the NPC cities) and have good traffic flow.
The only real advantage I got out of being in a player city is not having random critter spawns blocking the path from me to my factories.
YMMV.

When I began my humble little Tailor business in my player City on Corellia, and even with a shuttleport, I never really got much business from my vendors. I've since moved my vendors into a Guild vendor house about 1km South of Coronet, and my business is booming. Aside from being registered on the Planetary map, the only other advertising I do is every so often post an ad in the Auction channel for my shop. People ignore AFK starport spammers, but if they're looking to buy something, they normally think to check the auctions. otherwise, they don't have to listen to my spiel
.
If you decided on a Player City, Advertisement is the key. I would check out the traffic to other vendors in the city you're thinking of moving to, and if you see lots of buys, then those customers will most likely check out your shop, too. I still prefer being outside a major city, simply because the sheer number of vendors will draw a LOT of people to those locations, and often they'll see something that catches their eye and go browse when they only came for one thing.
That's my 2 CPU, hope it helps

I managed to squeeze in a merchant tent 700m south of theed (opposite direction of waterfall)
I loaded it up with a few clothing vendors, One is BE Clothing to wear under armor(+25 med shirts, +4melee+19stun shirts and bandos etc etc), Another for just straight black and white clothing of all varieties, just all black and white. and the last for loot
Well within 2 days, 80% of my loot sold, i almost completely ran out of black and white clothing, and i sold a ton of overpriced tissue'd be clothing, not overpriced just priced higher than what i usually sell for. I made about 5 million in loot and clothing sales. Also had a decent stock of pre-nerf mabari belts with 4 sockets that sold for 20k each.

I just have one thing to add:
Talus is not a good place to put shops. I know this.
