Thread: How do you deal with price nay-sayers?

I'm not a Master yet. I'm about halfway there. I'll be the first to admit that my prices are higher than some, but they're still well within the averages I've seen here on the boards.I keep my prices higher because I don't want to be a slave to my sewing machine. I roleplay, dance, and do other non-tailoring things. I don't want to sew all the time!

But I digress. Yesterday I had my first price nay-sayer. I had met her the night before in the cantina where I was dancing, and gave her the wp to my boutique. She must have went and looked a bit, and told me later that night that she "couldn't find anything she wanted at the price I offered." (This was, of course, after she told me point per point her fight with a butterfly, and then asked me how to use the vendor...) My reply was to thank her for stopping by the boutique and to have a nice evening. I chalked it up to her being new and didn't think much else of it

Until yesterday. My shop is on Corellia, but my (IG) fiance' and I share a large home on Naboo. We were in Theed shopping for some furniture when out of nowhere comes this, "you overprice..." from the same girl. My immediate gut instinct was to fire off a less-than-nice reply, but I bit my tongue and simply didn't reply at all. She didn't say anything else.

A couple hours go by...my fiance' has gone to bed (logged off) and I'm back on Corellia dancing at my usual cantina. In comes Price Nay-Sayer, who's a Novice Entertainer. My one friend says welcomes her back (she had apparently been there, then gone elsewhere, and was now returning) and she says, "Yeah...I had tofind a place to buy some decent clothes..."

Perhaps I'm looking at things wrong, but I feel this chick is just trying to goad me into saying something to her. I'm well-known and fairly popular in the city I work, so I'm not sure exactly what she's trying to do. That's neither here nor there though, I suppose.

How do the rest of you deal with people who slam your prices? I seriously wanted to tell this girl that when she gives up HER skill points, and spends HER time reaching a higher skill...if she wants to give her hard work away then by all means!

I'm honestly too busy to care about people like that. My dancer joined a group of 5 people on Lok one nice to dance when them while wounded. Everyone grabbed two 16k missions. It took maybe an hour or two to finish them all. I made 30k cash. There's PLENTY of money to be made out there.

When peoplecomplain to me about my prices I just blink at them, say "Well, everything I sell is less than 1 mission payout.." and congratulate them on finding a better price and ignore them while they sit there and babble, than eventually say "Ok fine, I'll take it".

In this situation, /ban and /ignore would work wonders. If somebody's in my shop bad-mouthing my business, I'm not inclined to try and reason with them, I'm inclined to insure that they never have to be offended by my shop ever again. Let them find somebody else to grief.

The funny thing is that people who slam you can inadventantly drum up backlash business, as other people that they annoy with their stupidity rally to support whoever they're trying to trash... even people who otherwise would never have heard of you. It's free advertising of a very strange but effective sort.

I'm not a dude. I realize that this one chick isn't the end-all-be-all of price naysayers either. Yes, I could put her on my /ignore list, but what happens the next time someone gets in a tiff over prices? I want to know how to EFFECTIVELY deal with with such situations so that I can make my point without yelling and screaming.

Any advice?

The best response is simply to say, "Okay, buy from someone else, then." And let it drop after that. If they still want something they'll pay your price, if not, they'll go away. Only "deal" with it if you actually need the business to stay financially afloat.

Hmm...a valid point. I'm by no means a millionaire, but my bank account has enough for me to take care of the things I need. (At least, for now...after the vendor nerf I might be broke!)

I have a customer just like that ... will come in an complain about my master tailor prices (I am on the server with the undercutter) .. yet she keeps coming back to buy non-master items. To me it is clear that she likes the selection of items I have.

So when she gripes about my prices, I just say that I charge that to be able to afford the wide selection I have ... and that if she wants I can get rid of 90% of my items and charge the same as the other guy. She usually huffs and walks away .. but still buys

Remember for every price naysayer there are ten good customers. And for every good cutstomer there are 10 idiots.

Just to expand on it a little, do remember that the customer is always right...with the caveat that if they aren't buying they aren't a customer so they're as wrong as can be.

How should you handle it?

If they simply state that "you're overpriced"

Just type "O.O I really don't know how you want me to respond to that."

Well it would depend how rude they were being. If they weren't too bad I'd just offer to make them something cheaper. I don't know your prices, but I would have thought most people could afford hot pants, or failing that simple shorts, and maybe just a short sleeve shirt with that would make her very happy *if* you have the ability to do them in bright colours. It's worth a go.

If you want to be short and sweet you can say, "I'll take that under advisement".
