Thread: Silly annoyance

This doesn't apply only to tailors, but this forum is the only one I read and write on. I was wondering how many of you others get hit on by cutomers? In character is acceptable, though still annoying. But I can deal with it. What annoys me is getting hit on OOC. Some of the customers I've had seem to think that its an opportunity to talk to me irl. They are of the belief that because I have a really sexy avatar (big surprise) that I too must be sexy and by default? interested. When I tell them I am not nearly as pretty as the character, they seem to think I am just being modest, or playing hard to get. I sometimes have to be rude. I'm not sure if it bothers me more less than the "being a musician and expected to dance" request, or the "hey, since you're a chick, can youtell me why you and the other chicks actually like Star Wars?" question. What the heck? And I'm a lady, darn it, not a "chick." lol Any advise on how to disarm politely and somehow more believably? Or just be blunt?

This is an old thread in the dancer forum, but it deals with the same issue. Dancers are harassed even more than tailors.

Just tell them you're a married man IRL and see how fast they back off.

I've never gotten anything *really* bad myself, but for unwanted "excessive" attention, the following have worked pretty well for me:

1. IC, my character has sort of a "super-busy career gal" persona, so I'll say things like "Oh, that's very flattering, but I'm way too busy running my business to even think about romance for now!"

2. OOC, revealing that I'm, in real life, er, "old," has been rather effective (if kinda depressing at the same time! ) Dispelling the potential idea that I'm some 20 year old nymphomaniac from "Girls Gone Wild" with the true fact that I'm 35 and haven't been in school for over a decade has cooled a couple fires.

Hmm. It depends on how annoying, crude or too personal and inquisitive they get, OOC or IC, but I usually totally ignore they said anything suggestive at all and just keep on talking about tailor business. If they are too immature or ignorant to take that hint and/or crude I instantly go full OOC and flat out tell them "Yes I am an RL female, 45, married longer than you've been alive, and clean up the language and topic or I am going to do a /report so fastyou won't know what hit you."

On the flip side: I had a regular customer who bught off my vendors frequently enough I remembered his name (which is saying something for this 45 year old woman with the worst memory ever!) and one day he happened to catch me actually present, restocking the vendor in the mall. We talked a bit, about a lot of things, IC and OOC. And then he hit on me IC. Not surprising and no big deal, happens all the time. (though most flirting I've seen isn't really role played and he was role playing the heck out of it which is what kept my interest and amused me) I brushed that off with a shake of my head and a simple "No, sorry. I'm still healing from my last broken heart and I am not interested in getting it broken again anytime soon." He didn't seem to mind getting brushed off, and seemed to appreciate Ikept it RP, and we talked some more while I kept restocking the vendor. A while goes by and he hit on me OOC in /tell and I told him "Not gonna happen." He didn't seem to mind that either.

Over the next couple weeks, I got tells from him now and then, just general chit chat with a little mildRPflirting tossed in (I think he can't help himself and it's that "you say that to all the girls" thing)and then we bumped into each other again at the mall one day. This time he wanted a custom outfit or few. Well, a couple hours later and many, many outfits later... he proposed. I said no. He begged. I said no. We laughed about it and he said he was going to ask every day until I said yes.

We started talking a lot more, anddoing somehunting and shopping together, and yes, he asked every day and every day I said no. We got to be really good friends. Then one day he went to one knee, opened a trade, gave me a ring, and proposed Unity. I said yes.

We'regood friends OOC, married IC and he still stays within my personal boundaries of RPromantic, RL just friends and it's never a problem. But if I'd /ignored him from the first, I'd never have gotten the chance to find out what a great guy he was once we got past the obligatorypickup line.

IC/RP, it's up to you to decide to be offended or not and play it out. OOC/RL We have the right to refuse to answer any personal questions, including the r u a rl girl? a/s/l? or any other rude, crude and lewd offers or comments. If they persist, use /ignore and /report.

If you want to just politely discourage them, stay in character. Honest. I've yet to see that fail. The OOC ones will get tired of it and shutup. The IC ones will either pursue you with more heroic and romantic fire and vigor, which can be big fun, or they will fail to rise to the occasion and skulk off like the scurrilous vermin they are.

I had one guy try to roleplay the suitor with me... and I was ok with it until he started in /tells. I'm sorry, if you're doing it in tells, it's not roleplay! So he starts with the "where are you?" "I want to see you?" "Can we be alone." And I'm like "whoa, cybernut! Back off." Anyway, I figured telling him that my fiance was not happy would do the trick, but then he gave me a lecture about the difference between game and reality - all the while I'm questioning him whether he knew the difference. He said a few disgusting things later, which are too raunchy to repeat, and I simply told him to behave. Kids.

I had thought of this great way to deal with certain customers in keeping our interactions 'strictly business' while still looking professional. I would always wear a black robe of honor and, being a twilek, a black ysrak. Never had a problem until the day I was playing 'dress up' in my shop, ran out of hides and quickly scooted out tothe back yard to pickup some more from the durni nest that was conveiniently there.Ten kills in, I'm running, not watching where I'm going and plow in to the area of aggro attatched to a molted wrix.

Two seconds later I popped up in the cloning center, cursing myself as I ran through town wearing the cutest but admittedly most 'hoe-inspiring' outfit when I hear 'Hey girl! You're kinda alright!' and several tells saying 'I've never seen you dress like that. I like it!'.

It was not a very productive day after that. =\

Yes, the right clothes help discourage prospective nuisances. And, quite honestly, a good shirt/vest combo w/ comfy pants can look really nice and attractive, without giving off a sex-kitten vibe in any way.

A big, clunky Tailor Apron is a nice touch, too. hehe

Anyway, I know that a lot of us are drawn to Tailoring because we're clothes whores - we want to look great! But maybe it'd be best to find GOOD outfits that don't seem to scream the names of the next junior-high porno junkie that walks into our shops?

I am a clothing whore, which is why Korstul's whole reply lent me to much humerous smirking.

Well put and dead on. ~_^

I love the loose dress. Simple, and has a neckline to die for. Guaranteed to look tailory in a bright color, but not give off a vibe of "how YOU doin?".

OMG you gals crack me up!!! I was wondering for a long time what i was doing wrong b/c every guy i passed was following me around forever! Then i found a really cute flared cuff shirt that i liked and some kacki colored pants, and could not pass up a nice vest. Started wearing it around, and poof, all the lil boys disappeared! lol I rarely wear the bikini top w/ a fashionably pleated skirt anymore, not because i don't like the look, but becase whenever i do i get the "how YOU doin'" lines.

Have recently feel in love w/ the loose dress too and everyone thinks i'm someone's mom, lol! Gotta love RP worlds!

*snicker*
I'm not a tailor, but allow me to pester you for a minute. I came here originally to read some of NJ's posts (I know her from the ID forums) and got hooked. I'm an absolute clothes junkie... and I must admit, the more revealing the better. Most of the time, anyway. I mastered dancer in nothing but a cloak and hot pants, and made mad tips from players who enjoy seeing ANY sort of breasts, pixellated or no. Being an image designer and a dancer, I get hit on a lot as well. I generally don't complain, because most of the time, the clothes I wear DO sort of ask for it. But occasionally I'll come across one who just won't give up, no matter how I ask... in which case, I introduce him to my three very large, very hotheaded, very combat-oriented brothers. That usually takes care of it.

BTW, I love you guys! I'm dying to be a tailor, but the thought of crafting makes me want to die... it took me a week to finish one box of medicine crafting. LOL. Thanks for everything you put up with for us clothes whores.
