Is there any way to damage a ring of unity, either through neglect or intentionally? And by damage, I mean reduce the condition of the ring without affecting the maximum condition of the ring. Thanks.

Once you're actually joined in unity, your unity ring will not decay when you die. However, if you haven't used that ring in a unity ceremony, rings decay just like any other article of clothing.

Before my husband left the game for his last time I asked him to divorce me. He had sold his account and I did not want to be married to someone that was in his character, but not really him at all.
I asked him if I could have his ring back so that I could keep it to have and hold onto for sentimental reasons. Once I got it back and equipped it, I noticed when it was side-by-side mine that I had already been wearing as part of our unity, his looked damaged. His ring actually looked like a divorced ring. The condition was still 1000/1000, but it's appearance was completely not new looking at all.
Broken, I guess you could say, like the bind is now

that's one of the big reasons I don't get married ingame. Real life relationships are too much of a rollercoaster for me, much less the fluid world of the game

Thanks for the love, and the kind words. It's been tough trying to cope with this lately. He was the only reason really that I logged in. To know that I'd get to see him, talk to him, go on adventures together - just really gave me something to look forward to always, you know? I guess the worst part is the fact that he sold his account. To know that the shell of his character still exists out there with a different soul - is just really bothersome to me and to know that I may see him, run into him...lol...I'm just not prepared for that. I know that if he hadn't sold it, just left - I guess things would be alittle different to me because that would give me hope that one day, if he decides to - he may come back...
Thanks again for the support, it really means alot to me and I appreciate you thoughtfully taking the time to do so.
To get back with what I was saying about how "damaged" the ring can look, I took a screenshot of my rings. Both were used in the binding process. The one that appears damaged was the one that was divorced. You can visually see a difference.

Jen, the ring is not a symbol of your love. It is dull and meaningless. What matters most is that you both know you have a special spot in each others hearts. Its one of those special spots that no matter what happens, that spot is reserved solely for you. next time you catch yourself smiling for no reason, just know it is because he is thinking of you. The bond of such love never dies. It is an eternal flame that burns withing you. He is not gone from your life. He is still with you, in your heart, in your memory, and in your soul. The bind is never broken
So be happy, because this is a new beginning
