Thread: Catelog Vendor

I had an idea, and like many others I have had, somebody else probably came up with it first. Here goes. Has anybody put up a vendor strictly for the purpose of being a catalog for the items you can currently make? I was looking for feedback on whether or not this is a viable idea, price the item at max price, but in the description of the item, input the cost to the customer should they wish to place an order. Reduces items on a vendor as well as storage of on-hand stock. I may try it anyways, but it would be awhile before I got any empirical data as I am a novice and my name isn't out there yet.

I would think that people would get tired of clicking to see a picture of each item. Why not simply use your house as a catalog, and put any important information in the item's description, then maybe on your vendor put a "read me" which outlines how to order. It is much easier to "browse" when all the items are displayed in a house than to click through items on a vendor.

My main consideration is balancing displays versus decorations. I will obviously have some items on display, but I was considering placing one of each item on a vendor with the price listed in the item name. This would show right away that a pair of wrinkled pants would cost 150 credits. Since I am unlikely to sell many pair of wrinkled pants, showing the item on a catalog vendor seems more logical than to have it taking up valuable display space. Same for wookie wear.

Yes listing each item takes away from my vendor total, but I am mastering merchant, so my limit will be 4000 items, and a hundred or so items listed on a catalog vendor will be a drop in the bucket. Compare that to 150 items in a medium house, and you see why I ask. Since I may also branch into other elite crafting professions later on, I want to maximize my floorspace without having to open dedicated shops for each profession.

You bring a valid argument to the table though, and I will heavily consider it while I work on mastering Tailor and Merchant. Thanks.

Quite frankly, in theory it sounds good, but in reallity, people will not sift through all those items reading the descriptions. They will open the vendor, see a bunch of stuff priced at 99999999, think storage vendor, and leave. People very very rarely read descriptions of items, and they don't like getting details on everything to see what it is.

If you intend on mastering another crafting profession, just setup your shop with two display areas. Then rotate out your displays on a monthly, weekly, etc. basis.

And for those who would perfer to keeo style or seasonal or even just basic displays in their house,

Do not forget that there are several tailors ( and a few who have left us)

that spent a large amount of time on sites just for that purpose.

Make a few bone segs labled (with cut and paste for multiple lines)

about checking Fashion by TK to see what each item looks like with colors of their choice

not to mention what they can wear where for each species and gender,

or ordering online thru Needful Things{so sweet it was updated and left for us to use}

with the email they can send order to, if you have a RL one you can use so freely.

I believe most all sites are in our sticky so check there and find one you would perfer your clients use.

Maybe I should clarify my intent. You open my vendor and hopefully sort by name (I do on all but shipwright vendors). You will see a ***READ ME*** item with instructions on placing a custom order. Listed below will be items alphabetically. You switch to sorting by item category and look for pants. You see in the item cell Wrinkled pants - 100 creds. No need to open the item and look at the description block. Open it if you want to see what it looks like in better detail, but you see the name of the item and the price right off the bat. Sure, some may see the 9999999 in the price window and move along, but with a vendor named BB Fashions Catalog, maybe they will get the picture within a few seconds of seeing what's there. Yeah, I know I give people more credit than they probably deserve, but I'm an optimist at heart. I also plan on having a vendor or two dressed in the fashion deal of the month, once I get Hiring 4.

I was going to draw up a website to show the items and palettes with a URL on the READ ME item, but with the above links provided I think I will just go that route.

I find people hardly ever read "read me's." I have a no return policy on a read me, and I still get them from time to time.
