Im sorry if this sounds dumb, but what are they ? what are they used for ? and what do you use on them ( like how do you make it ? )

This is a totally new subject for me so excuse me if its something simply stupid, but we are all new at one point

Lightbulbs.

You know how it gets dark at night, and you have that personal lamp thingy you can turn on? Sockets let you install additional lightbulbs to illuminate a larger radius area around you.

Mobs can drop skill enhancing items, whick can be dropped over a clothes item with sockets, in the same manner weapon power ups are applied to weapons. I believe the socketed enhance is permanent though.

Can anyone confirm if you can remove stuff that u have dropped into a socket?

You can't remove the skill enhancement once it is used. Each skill enhancement takes one socket, and most clothing items can be made with up to 4 sockets.

I bought a cloak with 4 slots. I successfully drag and dropped a powerup on to it and it added the power up. It now says it has 3 slots, but it will not accept any other powerups. Any ideas? Also how do you add a powerup to a socketed backpack? It just drops into the pack as inventory for me. Thanks

Ok I searched a bit further on this board and discovered the following

1) Not being able to drop powerups into a backpack slot is a known bug
2) There may be difference between powerups that look like panels vs ones that look like rolls of tape? Does it depend on what the clothing was crafteed with (ie you can only use a panel like powerup if the clothing was crafted with fiberpanels?)

Tape is for clothing.. panels are for armor. Don't think armor useing panels is in the game as of yet. But should be soon.
