Something just occurred to me about sockets. We've heard a lot of different people claim that they have good/bad luck on sockets. The "I almost always get 4" and the "I almost never get 4". We've thought since launch that the number of sockets was correllated to the assembly skill that you have (tailor for tailored things, artisan for artisan things). Wouldn't it follow then that the quality of the materials used in the final combine would also matter (i.e. not in the components but the "raw" materials used in the schematic)? This is because the success of an assembly, in other classes at least, certainly is affected by the quality of the materials.
This is something I will start to keep track of a little more carefully and see if it impacts results.

I would say this is true, except that I picked up weaponsmith and I don't have bad materials anymore. I still have bad luck with sockets, though.

I thought I remembered NJ saying a long time ago that it was tied to how many levels of artisan you had instead of how many tailor. But then my brain might be mush

It is for artisan items. But I am also a master artisan.

Here was the deal with the artisan stuff.
TH told me a theory that socketing might have become linked to artisan level. So I went on TC that night and tested the socketing with various templates and discovered that artisan had nothing to do with tailoring socketing (but obviously something to do with domestic arts item socketing). TH told public that we were pursuing the (now disproven) theory regarding artisan skills. Meh, these things happen, he was going off the best information he had at the time, don't think he had seen my report yet. Chaos ensued.
Anyhoo, point of that story is that artisan level has NOTHING to do with tailoring sockets. Nothing. Zip.
