Hey everyone.

I'm currently at 3433 with tailoring, and loving it. The problem I'm running into, though, is deciding whether or not I should pick up Merchant. I mainly started my tailor to be costume designer for my dancer and to help my other dancer friends with clothes as well.

I'm having a lot of fun, though, especially now that I'm getting more colors. And, I'm thinking of possibly setting up a shop...but, I'm not quite sure how high to take the Merchant tree...especially considering my plans include Master Tailor and Teras Kasi Master (I'm gonna kick bootie and look good doing it. )

So, for others out there who have mastered other professions as well as tailor, do you worry much about Merchant?

Thanks in advance!

Well, both my Tailors have a signifigant amount of merchant...It is a very usefull group of skills to have...and I really cannot stand the outfits the NPC vendors come dressed in >_< they are truly hideous.

If nothing else get hiring 4 for long enough to dress yourvendors properly and then forget it and learn the skills like advertising and such.

I went Master Tailor, Master Merchant and Image Designer 2/2/0/0 (Can do hair styles/colors, cosmetics and face and stat migrations). It's a great combo for tailoring. I can have 6 vendors, dressed up to double as my fashion displays (I change their outfits often), all the merchant discounts and advertising and tents. Since moving to a tent by our city shuttleport, sales have tripled. And the tight space of the tent made having the vendors dressed up more important.

I stuff those vendors full (running about 2000 on the main vendor, about 300 each on the wookiee and crates vendors and one each quest reward item on the Luxuries vendor and one vendor hidden in my basement at my house for rollover relisting in quiet surroundings and for special order customer pickups.). The tent shop pretty much runs itself while I gallavant around with a full travelling tailor kit on me at all times so I can do orders on the fly. A datapad full of droids helps. I have 2 with clothing crafting stations and 10 item storage in them, a power/repair/10 item storage droid, a WGD/repair/10 item storage droid and1 ad barking/10 item storage/waypoint dispensing3PO droid. And I can ID your hair and makeup to match your new outfit too.

That's the beauty of being a tailor. It's a very malleable profession. You can "tailor" it to suit your playstyle.

I am a Master Tailor and Master Merchant and I wouldn't have it any other way

If you cannot Master it, you definitely want to get the Hiring I-IV & Advertising I-III. That will allow you to dress your vendor and advertise on the planetary map. Depending on how many vendors you want, you may need to go up the Management tree. Each level of Management gives you an additional vendor.

Efficiency is only necessary when you want to savve money. If you are starting a large business such as a multi-planet chain, you will really want this bc you will pay so much in planetary advertising, bazaar advertising, and maintenance (Though generally you will make up for this loss with the high amount of sales planetary gives you.)

Hope I was able to help ya.

Well, I'm a master tailor and master BE, and I had just enough skill points left over to get advertising III. You'd be surprised how effective showing up on the world map is at attracting new customers.

Other wonderful things Merchant gives you (which I lack the skill points to get) are more vendors, more options as to what sort of vendors you want, the ability to dress your vendors up, and, of course, the Efficiency reduction in maintenance fees on structures and vendors.

So... Yeah. Merchant helps quite a bit. But it's not absolutely necessary. Plus, at least until they fix it, you can just go up the trees, get what you want, place your vendors, dress them up, etc. Then drop merchant and you'll keep them. That just seems cheap to me, though, so I refuse to do so.

This is a common delimma, and you need to think carefully about what you want, and what goals you might have.

Having a vendor is nice if for no other reason than you can make things for people, throw them on the vendor, and have them pick it up at their conveneience. You can do that just fine with business 3.

If you want to run a shop, and want to have fun decorating it, and making it unique and all, I'd say getting novice merchant, or if possible hiring 4 would be a no-brainer. That allows you go have appealing looking vendors that will fit into whatever your shop concept is.

If you want to get a lot of traffic in your shop, advertising 3 is really required. It puts you on the map, and that will help a lot. Getting a lot of traffic is a mixed blessing though, lol, there's definitely pros and cons to that.

You can also join a mall, and by doing that you don't really need to worry about being on the map quite so much if volume selling is your goal. But of course you have a lot less creative input than you do in your own shop.

I would get advertizing 3. I couldn't care less about dressing my vendors personally /shrug.

Too many fun things to do, and not enough skill points. /ponders the possibility of another alt.

Thanks for the replies everyone! It helps a lot. Of course, it makes the decisions tougher, but it helps!

I agree with all that was said before but want to add.......

Efficiency not only gives you discounts on your shop and vendors but every structure you own. That includes all houses, harvesters and factories. I save far more on the harvesters and factories than on my buildings......
