Without getting into a big to-do let me just say I'm getting into tailor for the love of it (are you as happy as I am that the days of the holo-whore are at an end?).
Here's my question: Because of the template I'm trying to squeeze into 250 SP I was considering just going 4-4-0-0. Does this make any sense whatsoever? What am I missing out on if I don't climb the Formal Wear and Tailoring trees?

OMG! Stag, you're becoming a tailor? hehehehe, welcome. Anyhooo, the thing about tailor is that so much of it is about color, and unless you progress up the "tailoring" subranch, you'll be able to make things only in black, white, pink, and a few other horrible colors that nobody will be satisfied with in general. What I found was that I started to become happy with the color selection at around x-x-x-3 or so, and when I was working up the tailoring tree in the "old days", I actually progressed to 0-0-0-2 before I started adding any new schematics just because I felt there was no point unless I could do the schematics that I knew in at least a handful of attractive colors.
Oh, and as far as the formalwear tree goes, hmm, I actually made the mistake of doing that last, but if I had to do it again I might very well do it before casual and fieldwear. I'd say the formalwear clothing line has the lions share of the most popular outfirst, particularly for the ladies.I don't believe there's a single item in therethat you can put an RFP into if that is a consideration, but as far as what you'll get asked to make from various customers, friends, and so forth, probably like half of it will be from formalwear, and almost none of it will be from fieldwear for example.

Heya Arthur,
Good to see you again. Actually, I bought an alt account a few weeks ago and this is the deal:
Stag: TKM/ BE
AH-Stag: Chef / Tailor / Merchant
I really liked BE, I just had to quit it for awhile due to certain frustrations with my customer base. As you can see, between my two accounts I've got my bases covered. I can run successful tailoring and chef businesses while supplying my own BE components. I'm pretty excited but I'm still a good month away from mastering all those professions.
Are you still BE? I thought you were giving it up but I haven't talked to you in awhile.

Me give up BE? nah, unlikely. There's just not anything else I'd rather do, and I get to taste a variety of things through a variety of different toons.
Oh no, another Bria bio chef!
Oh well, at least you will be a tailor, so you can't be all bad, lol.

Knowing what its like as master I couldn't cope with anything less!
But yeah, as Arthur has said you need the tailoring branch if you want decent colours and the formal wear items sell really well if you are looking to make money from tailoring. To be annoying though Cloaks are in casual wear and the bulk of the combat BE items are in field wear.
If you find you are generating enough tailoring xp it might be worth going up the branches that appeal the most to you first, making everything you want from them, then dropping them out to try another branch.
Or buy an alt and go for master.....
