Thread: What is great about the tailor profession and how to improve it...
I just had a couple ideas about the general model for the tailor profession (as opposed to specific technical issues). Firstly, I'd like to say I think this game is great. Sure, it has problems, but given its enormous scope and the amount of stuff it got right, I readily forgive the devs. That's not to say I don't think that fixing the bugs and improving the game is important. On the contrary, this game has INCREDIBLE potential to be THE MMORPG to have for years to come, and fixing the bugs and implementing some of the myriad possible cool features will make that a reality. With that said:
The cool thing about the tailor profession is that it is at least marginally creative… at least it is compared to the other professions. One of the biggest issues with the in-game economy is that novice crafts-people have no customers-the majority of people buy from the few who have power-gamed their way to master-level, who can make better products in every respect. This makes it a chore to grind your way through 1000s of items until you have a marketable product. No fun : ( . The tailor profession, on the other hand, is largely based on a player's aestehetics as opposed to their skills. A novice tailor can still sell plenty if they have a sense of style. It's not THAT creative to color and combine pre-designed clothing, but it's a good start and is creative enough to work.
I've been able to fill up the bazaar with my clothes and have 95% of them sell every day since I was since I was doing Domestic Arts levels by making good combos, labeling them as such, and generally being "creative". The more customization available, the more colors available, the better the tailor profession works. (this IS going somewhere, keep reading…)
In that light, I think the color-curve for new tailors is far to steep. Colors need to be re-distributed amongst skill levels to allow more earlier, and colors need to be expanded to a full-palette. I don't think this will lead to hideous pink/green/red color combos any more than they already exist (which is plenty thanks to randomly colored loot drops), but it WILL help the tailor economy. There is no reason that a tailor with two levels of experimentation (color) should STILL make primarily black & white clothes because the color options STILL are terrible at that kind of advanced level.
In the same vein, more clothing models would do nothing but good for the class.
Adding MORE color (and sooner), MORE customization (item fit, anyone? Tight? Loose?), and MORE schematics (at all levels) will make the game more fun for tailors and the people who buy their stuff. It will REDUCE GRINDING further as tailors can actually have some fun with more options and experimenting with combos, as they gain XP. It will also fuel the ailing and rickety economy by letting even aspiring players sell goods in a healthily competitive environment…
At leastSOME of these things aren't so hard to implement. I wish I could think of similar crafting solutions for other classes, but I can't. But I don't see why we can't improve this one!

Wonderful post. I'd like to add that it would be wonderful if tailored items could be sold as "outfits" on the bazaar. If you're going to be creative, it must be done with an entire outfit rather than an individual item. That would be really cool if tailors could put together an entire outfit made up of many pieces and sold it as an individual item on the bazaar. Yes, some people like to do their own mix and matching... but some don't.
Anyway, I just started tailoring so excuse me if this feature is possible but I just didn't realize it. I'm having a lot of fun.
Ok, I agree with you on some points, and disagree on some.
I do want more colors, namely the the +55 Customization they took from Mastering. That's the skillmod that give us more options on higher end clothing, and also gives us bright oranges, yellows, etc. Yeah ithelps lower stuff too, but I have enough there for the most part.I could care less about them adding uglier shades of green and browns. ![]()
I do think it will be easy to revamp our class with new schematics and colors as weencounter no balance issues. I don't think they should until other classes are working as intended, and everyone can login though. Most of our issue have work arounds, or are just annoying.
I do hate grinding, BUT I also know that you don't have to, to skill up. Some people choose to because they want Master bad. Others don't like grinding, so they make orders for people. Both skillup, one just goes faster. If you want Master quickly, and badly enough, grind away. It's a personal choice that has nothing to do with power gamers.
Now, as far as moving the colors down, like reds, blues, purples; I don't agree. Firstly, I don't even think it's neccessary for sales. My number one requested color is *drumroll* black. Number two is black also. Judging by market demand, if anything, they should move black to Master(sarcasm). You said it yourself, you manage to sell almost everything you post on the bazaar. As long as you can make black, most stuff will sell. Second, it's a mark of skill level and dedication. Anyway, what colors would you want to work for at higher levels if you move the good (reds, blues, purples, etc) colors down?
As far as more customization goes, I think that adding item sizes really just increases tedium. One size fits all makes it easier to buy and sell. Maybe down the roading adding optional little touches to clothing might be nice, but who knows.
Anyway, just my thoughts. I think we are one of the best working classes, so deserve less attention while other classes get actual game stopping fixes, and the servers get stabilized. By the time they implement any of this stuff, you'll probably be Master also, Tailoring your little heart out with few worries.
Oh, and btw you can post outfits on the bazaar if you're trusted. You have to put them in a pack, then post the pack. Just name the pack "XXXX Outfit" or some such.
I'm not a tailor, but one of my biggest wishes is for tailors to be able to make 'hooded cloaks" ( not the grand healer robe ).
