That is not corect.

How it actually works is:

Clothing items are allowed to have up to 6 different mods at any one time.

so
a shirt with MD/DvS and four sockets can still accept four other varied mods

but
Pants with MD/DvS and Inj/Wnd treatment that has four sockets will only allow 2 more mods to be placed into it via SEA

As for crafting with just melee defense, it is not possible at all.
The BE tissue which carries MD, will also carry Defense vs stun,
it is just how it is produced..nothing will change but the + given
(ie +2/13 or +4/18..it will always include both mods)
