Thread: Idea I would like to see: Let the customers choose the color!
ah think of the database space we would save if clothing could be colored!
alas my poor vendor with unsellably colored clothes!
I disagree with the dye-kit idea. First of all, one of the cool things about the tailoring skill is that it is the only remotely creative skill. You can't ACTUALLY design the clothes, but you can color and combine them. Smart coloring is what allows newbie tailors to sell their clothes: a novice tailor with good color sense is worth more than someone half-way to master who has no taste. The fact that I make the smart color combinations is what's allowed me to always be a successful tailor--even though I might not be the most skilled.
OK, so you say, "You could still sell your color combos if players could re-dye stuff later". I'm still not so sure about this. First, players would by MANY fewer clothes if they could re-dye existing outfits. Even if durability was working (and dying took some points from it), just dye and do some clothing repair... no biggie. Secondly, most players don't have much taste (or at least aren't very adventurous)... they rely on me to pick their whole outfit. This is evidenced by the plethora of players who want "I don't know, make me look cool--just make sure it's all black. Hey, I know, can you make me look like Neo from the Matrix?!" Also by the fact i sell more black Gunman's Dusters than all other items combined (no matter HOW much I charge
) We tailors have a DUTY to make our fellow SWGians fashionable... I feel I can stem the tide of black clothes by offering interesting alternatives.
Anyway, it helps our profession that a new item needs to be created for a color change... now if only I could make all the colors I wanted...

One idea might be to include some kind of Tailor Dye skill that will let Tailors change the colour of items on a person much like the way Image Designers can change your hair colour. Tailors would be required to have some type of Dye Kit. Every colour change eats up a charge on the kit.
Then if you buy a dark blue coat cuz it's theonly one you can findbut it's not quite the right blue you can have a tailor play around until you find something you like.
This would also save SOE as Tailors would make less items. No need to have 10 Boots all different colours. It would reduce the number of items in their database.
I agree with Aveon the part about coloring clothes being one of the only creative input things in the game. Well, besides getting to make your own character. Even though I'm somewhat colorblind in real life I still enjoy picking what I like to color the clothes I make, that's why I chose tailor above any other crafting profession. More so to make my own clothes than to be a big business person.
If your tailor friend and you are close have him/her take a screenshot of his or her color pallet and email it to you. That could get done a LOT easier and fasterthan having the devs change something as big as custom colors for non-tailors.
I like the idea of the catalog being a terminal we can set up in our shop, and you input scematics of the items you can and/or want to make. The terminal allows the customer to browse what you're willing to make, and view it with the different color combinations that the specific crafter can make. If you no longer want to keep an item in stock, you can delete the schematic from the catalog. It should also allow an "order this" function, that will allow the customer to send an image of the item to the crafter, so he/she can match the colors the customer has chosen. The crafter would also be able to list the price they want for the item. This design also allows the terminal to be used by other crafting proffesions. For architects, it should allow the viewing of the final building, not the deed, so the customer can see the acctual house they're buying, instead of the actual deed, which tells one very little about what the final house will look like.
