can someone explain what the sockets in clothing do? how do i benefit from this?

They let you put character enhancements into clothing. These are rare drops off of NPC's, and give stat/skill bonuses.

Has anyone seen anything that can be placed in one of these sockets? What do they look like, how wouldI know one when I found one? Is there a certain type or difficulty of NPC specifically that would drop these - I'm assuming the blue guys around the cities wouldn't. Do they work as weapon upgrades where they have a limited use and then vanish, or are they permanent? Also, does putting one of these *things* in an article of clothing require tailoring skill - are there failures?

Sorry for the barrage of questions but sockets were something I never really touched upon during beta or have seen mentioned that often on the boards or in the game.

I've heard of these skill gems. I hear they look like gems. (Sorry, I don't do any hunting.) Supposedly they're a pretty rare drop. Supposedly they're permenant and can be swapped between items. It requires no skill to put them into, remove or change them between items. No failures. Again, supposedly. I've had several requests for socketed items though, so I'll ask around.

They look like components. I've had some that look like a Trim component, and some that look like a Bone Armor plate. Personally, I try to avoid refering to them as "gems," because when folks ask me about them in game and say "gems" I always get them confused with gemstones, the mineral we need to create jewelry.

On the Bazaar (the only place I've actually seen one to date) they show up under "Miscellaneous/Item" and are named something beginning with "Skill" - "Skill Enhancing Item" or somesuch....
