Thread: How to handle the theft of a custom order...

Hello everyone,

Just had somthing happen that I was afraid would happen eventually and I was wondering how you all have dealt with somthing like this happening. I have a vendor on which I place custom orders in packs to put up for customers to pick up at their leisure. I have seen quite a few other's in all of the crafting and merchant professions use this same system. Today I logged on to fnd that someone had bought an order that I had placed on there last night for a frequent return customer of mine. Needless to say my temper is soaring out of the roof right now. I contacted my customer to make sure that she hadn't just asked someone she knows to pick up her order for her. Which of course she hadn't. SO basically this person has stolen the order from me and my customer. So my question is how should I handle this other than my first gut reaction to find a BH to set out after this guy....

Thanks for any input!

There is probably not much you can do about this time, but I always put my custom orders into a cheap traveller's pack (cargo pockets would be even better if we could put things in them) and label them 'order for x', where x is the name of the person the order is for. That keeps people from knowing what is inside unless it is the person who ordered it.

Yes I do the same, "So and So's Order" in a cheap pack. Sadly I don't think this person cared much what he got as long as it was somthing apparantly.

Contact the guy who bought it and ask for its return. If he does not comply ban him from your shop. I honestly would ban his entire guild, so that way you have extra people to harass him to give it back. But I don't negotiate with smacktards.

Another option is to charge obscenely much for custom orders on the vendor, and then tip your customer back the difference, or have your customer "offer" the empty pack back for the difference, but that involves a lot of trust.

Alternatively, put the custom order vendor in a different, nondescript (but public) house, such that your normal shoppers do not see it and are not tempted. Mine, right now, is in the basement of my shop, but I'm thinking about moving it. I'm hoping that Sony will implement private vendors so this will not be an issue.

Here's how you handle it

You do order #'s... Start at whatever order # you want... perhaps #1

So lets say I order something...you tell me "Your order # is 1"

When I come to pick up my order it's there.

On top of that...you FILL your vendor with fake orders. Make a pack that says order #5...fill it with resources of 1 qty each so it appears that there's say...10 items in there. Sell it for 100,000

I know a lot of vendors who do that. I've even seen some people say "Special order for xxxx, 100,000 steel 1000sr"

To a person who doesn't belong there ...it looks like they're getting a good deal. When they buy it though there's a cdef pistol in it...serves 'em right.

Put a bag in the vendor that says "PURCHASE THESE ITEMS AT YOUR OWN RISK - SOME ARE WORTHLESS"

If someone buys it and then complains to you that it was misleading...they really have no arguement.

Sadly, there is no direct recourse for this. What it comes down to is: you put something for sale on your vendor and someone bought it. As far as SOE is concerned, everything's working just the way it should. [rolls eyes]
Private vendors would be great. Even better would be an ability to select names from your friend list and restrict purchase of the item to that person.
While I'm wishing I'd love to have a cargo pocket type item that wil hold say 5-10 things and not use as many resources as a pack.

this is what i do when it happens, because it does happen...

Persons item "x" is on the customer orders vendor, in a separate part of the shop away from the regularly stocked vendors. Someone perchases it who it was not made for. I log in next day, see the email it has been bought by someone other then who it is intended for. I contact the person it was made for, if they didnt send the other person to collect it for them, i give no warning to the other person and they are now Banned from my shop. If they contact me about their banning, and agree to not touch any vendor other then the regular vendors, ill un-ban them, otherwise they stay banned. If they get rude they are now permanently banned with No chance ill unban them. Sounds harsh i know, but most of my customers know my policy on the customer orders vendor, it's there to help them find their orders faster, and not have to wait on me to be logged in to recieve it. If it gets abused, i take these steps to assure it wont happen all the time. It hasnt happened much since i started using this method, but business is still excellent. So the honest customers have no issues with this, and give repeat business becuase they know their order is fairly safe until they come to pick it up.

I have run across several very wealthy players who make it a point to go around buying custom orders on the theory that those packs have all the most desirable stuff. Aside from maintaining a hidden vendor for custom sales, there is really no way to prevent this.

decoy's. Expensive decoys with crap inside. If someone buys the decoy then serves em right for being a poacher.
