I heard you have to have a wearables factory to make some clothing items. Is this true? I know you need a crafting station to make some items, but a friend told me you need the wearables factory also to make certain items but he didn't know which ones. Can someone straighten this confusion out for me?

Higher in the Tailor line (tier 3 or 4 clothes) you will start seeing garments needing multiple identical components like synth cloths, fiber panels, etc...

Identical components can only be made with a factory.

Well, technically speaking, you don't actually need a factory to make any clothing item, per say. However, almost every item starting with 3rd tier boxes require factory identical components, which means you need to pull them from factory crates to make the clothing item. I suppose it is possible for a tailor to aquire the necessary crates to make these items, but most tailors as a convenience prefer to have a factory or two, to make these components themselves.

This is actually typical of most crafting professions in the game.

It will get to the point where you don't want to hand-craft any components, even when you don't have to use crated ones. I don't hand craft any components - not even shoe soles or cargo pockets. And I crate-run all my backpacks (because, hey, you can't colorize backpacks).

I have 5 factories (Ok, so I share with my armorcrafting fiance) and I couldn't live without at least 2.

Love your factory.
