Thread: Pardon me Mr. Vader, but who is your tailor?

First of all, I'm not a tailor obviously and I've never tried the profession. Iread through the stickied posts wholeheartedly support everything you guys are asking for from what I read in looking through the Top 5 list and the Wishes/Dreams/Screams post/thread. One of the greatest things about this game outside the content is just how much you already can customize the look of your character, and the more the better as far as I'm concerned.

However, as a clothing customer on the other end of things, the absolute numero uno top of the list gripe I have about the current state of the game as it relates to clothing (and if this would be taken care of by the request for a full 255 color palette then great) is the fact that 'black' is *NOT* truly black.....it's more of a really dark grey. And actually to be honest this applies not just to tailors but to anything that can be colored, but still......when I think of black and what I want to see, I think of Vader's outfit. *THAT* is the way black should really be, true jet black....and yet you can't get anything made in anything darker than a really dark grey. Again, if the 255 color palette would solve this problem then count me in 1000 times over in supporting this move, for tailors and everyone else/every toolthat has the ability to customize color in the game. Just curious if I'm the only one that feels like this or not.

Sorry for the rant, this just really gets under my skin.

The problem with true black is that you can't get any texturing at all if you have true black. All you get is the outline of the clothes with a big empty black space where the rest of the clothes should be. I know that true black sounds nice, but it does *not* look good. It would just make you look like you are wearing a little black blob instead of clothes. You don't see true black in real life either. There is always light reflecting off of any black clothing you happen to have. For example, Darth Vader's outfit is very shiny, so although it is very dark, it has some definition from the reflections coming off of it. If it was matte it would look terrible!

I agree that true black would be awful but our leather palettes are just nasty and irritating. It would really be nice to make a pair of black leather boots that are...black...like the black cloth we fashion. Its not a true black, but its certainly not a grey. It is an art problem though. The artists have to build in highlights and low lights in any item so that it has texture and form. I think the SWG art team has done a good job with this so far and the black that we do have in cloth seems to strike the right medium. I'm not sure what happened with the leather palettes though...or why they think we wouldn't have blue dyes for leather, or even red. We can obviously dye slippers any color, not sure what happened to boots and gloves. Are we an advanced technology society or a primative one that's limited to shabby colors? I coulda sworn that Star Wars was high tech. I mean...we do have guns...all terrain vehicles and...oh my...space craft that take us from planet to planet. *stares* We've even got...communications, but no red or blue leather...go figure.

Anyway...here's hoping we get better leather palettes soon. Looks like publish 7 will come and go without new wookiee duds or palette expansions...or necklaces fixed. I suppose we hope for publish 8.

It's not really the colour palette, but the materials that cause the problem. Everything is a dull textured fabric. We have no silks, or slick leathers. The shoulderpads on the Lined Workshirt have a great black, as does the Doctor's Dress apron. Both are a very deep dark.

If the developers could adjust the reflection mapping on some of the textures to get the kind of leather outfit that Vader has, then we could get some really good clothes out of it. I would love love love love love to be able to switch some materials around when making clothes.

Another problem is that probably every single person playing the game has different monitor brands and settings. Something that looks black on my montior may not look black on yours.

A lot of folks changed their display settings to make it easier to see around your character (as opposed to the tiny ctrl+l light radius) at night. This makes most everything else washed out. Every time I've had a customer who claims that something I see on my monitor as a fairly reasonable black looks completely grey to them, I've asked them about their monitor settings only to hear a big "d'oh!"

People always use Vader as their in-game example, but I'm sure each of the actual SW characters had many many many hours of work put in on them. So his outfit could be perfectly black and still look fantastic because of the large amount of design time that had to go into that one character. But I doubt the art team is going to be able to spend all the time they spent working on Vader on each and everyone of our hundreds of schems to make it be perfect black, still have a texture, and be decent looking in the wide variety of lighting that you're going to see your clothes under.

Besides, I for one am a little glad we can't make clothes as black as Vader's outfit. If they changed it so that our cloaks could reach that perfect black, there'd be an instant trend and every d00d would be after me for a "Vader outfit." Vader is supposed to be the biggest, baddest looking guy in game, we as characters are supposed to be the regular people of the SW universe. People like Vader are supposed to look cooler than anyone else!

Has any one seen Lord Vader??

I have in his room at the Emperors retreat on Endor and IMHO the image does not do him justice. If my memory serves me well (might not) the colour has a slight blue tinge to it but the character has a brown tinge. Am I the only person that thinks this does not look right. I have tried this on 2 sperate monitors on different machines and all look the same.

This is only my opinion but I think it does need to be looked at.

My main problem is that some items take dyes very dark, some items take dyes very light, and some are somewhere inbetween. When I pick the color I've named "Sapphire" on one piece of clothing, it may look a ton different than on another piece of clothing. If I want to wear a Twi'lek Bone Crest, I have to wear something with it that takes very rich dyes, as there is no way to make that leather part look like anything other than a very dark black, very dark brown, or some kind of blotchy color that almost kinda takes the tint of the little color box you selected.

its the idea behind painting that you never use out-of-the-tube black because it looks dull and flat. you are better off mixing your own black (you can make warm blacks, cool blacks, neutral-tone blacks) which add a ton of depth rather than slopping on this disgusting flat black. if you look at your black tshirt in the real world, you will notice where the type of black shifts as the light hits it and is absorbed by the pigments. there might be a greenish black here, a yellowish-black there, a blueish black in a shadow. also, pigments and light work differently as primary colors on say a computer screen are different than paint pigment primaries.

as people have said, its the way to add texture to dark clothing, shadowed parts being the blackest-black.

Regarding Vader's outfit, although darker blacks are high on the wish list of many players, my own question would be... where is the cape? I would love to see some capes available, I'd even settle for Lando-style hehe
