SOMEONE MAKE THIS POST STICKY!!

i've posted this before but as soon as it's off the front page thereare more "why can't i wear a hood?" topics. so here is the answer to the unversial question of

Why are there no hoods for Non-Wookies?

the answer is

Hair

the game gives us a variety of hair styles to choose from. the downside is that many of these hair styles would pokeright through the top and/or back of a hood. this is called clipping. because Wookies don't have hairstyles to worry about the Devs could make hoods for them withno clipping probelms.

BUT WAIT, you say, there are hoods in the game as you point at the Grand Healers Robe and the rare NPC. the Grand Healers Robe has a hood but it also covers your hair and neck with a cowl. something similar is done with all non-Wookie head gear. the Sunguard and the Warm Hat both have a covering that covers/replaces your hair so thereis no clipping. as for the NPCs with hoods, because the Devs can put a hairstyle on the NPC that will not clip, the NPC can wear the hood.

BUT WHY CAN'T WE HAVE SOMETHING LIKE THAT? you say. yes in theory, when you equip a hood, the hood could force your hair into a non-clipping hair style and then you could wear your hood and be happy. but sadly this is one of those things that seams to work in theory but fails in practice, like time travel and a sitcom with Norm McDonald.

there are clothing items in the game that all ready replace existing hair with a non-clipping versions. they are the head gear for Twe'lik. currently there are probelms with flesh that peeks through being the wrong color (i.e. white) on some items that have not been fixed. so chances are that same could happen with hoods. your black/blond/brown hair and any skin that shows under the hood could end up the wrong color.

BUT THEY COULD FIX THAT, you say. yes they could but even if they did there is a much bigger probelm. the hairstyle it's self. who would pick the hairstyle to wear with hoods? what if it wasugly? and the most probelmatic part of thiswould be that since hoods would be for both genders, the hairstyle would have to be too. there are few truely uni-sex style in the world and they are fewer in the game and even less that look good. so all you guy out there would have girly hair and the ladies would be very butch.

WELL,THEY COULD FIX THAT TOO, you say. *sigh* yes if the Devs fix long time coding probelms, create whole new items with the mostdisplay instructions to date, design and model a first true uni-sex haircut the world has ever seen and animate the most complicated clothing item so far, then yes there could be hoods.

As a Rodian with the 'fan' hairstyle, I can tell you something interesting happens... I wear a sunguard, and from some angles and distances, it clips (i.e. hair pokes through the top of the sunguard by some 3 or 4 inches), but at other (most) angles there is no clipping.

Now, what this tells me is that the assumption that hats are just a special hairstyle is not correct.

actually the hair style thing is correct.

the clipping you see is because the frills on a Rodian aren'ttreated likehair. as many styles extend down to the jaw and cheek and some are mostly on the face, in that respect the Rodian frills are more likemodeled facial hair. because of thisthe Devs chose not have the frillsdissapear when head gear is equiped. they probable didn't think it would be a big deal as this only happens with some frill styles and most hats are very big and would hide the frills most other styles. btw the 'now you see me, now you don't' quality that the frills display has to do with alpha planes and a bunch of 3D modeling stuff that i won't bore you with.

I think that they just don't want a bunch of people running around looking like jedi's

----------------------------------------------------
The Force is what gives a Jedi "her" power.
It's an energy field created by all living things.
It surrounds us and penetrates us.
It binds the galaxy together.

Female Rodian (all the female hairstyles are 'top/side/back' of the head, none "look like" facial hair)... it certainly looks like hair-hair to me... (braids, ponytails)... this particular style is a 'fan' kind of like (but not as extreme as) some of the Padme formal hairstyle (ok, in SW reality as well as film-set reality, her hairstyles were likely 'extensions')

you are correct all the FEMALE Rodian hair looks like well, hair, but many theMALE Rodian frills extend down into the facial region. the Devs treated both sexes the same when it came to the hat/hair thing.

and as for the Jedi thing, as if the lack of hoods could stop them.
