Tailor Archive
Thread: About to give up
This is not a rant, just a kind of state of the tailor as I see it.
I started tailoring maybe 3 weeks after the game was released, and got master pretty fast (I wasn't only grinding but grinded a fair amount). I've been a tailor since. I started my first shop near Coronet, sales were very slow but it was working, then things started working better once I got master. I then moved to Bestine and I haven't looked back, I moved three times afterwards but always in the same area.
I was always keeping over 600, then 1k items on my vendor, until bio clothing came in. I had to stop restocking for a while to work on the new products (made my alt a master BE at the time), made a big sale that worked quite well to reduce my stock to what will actually sell, even if it meant reducing the selection, as I was getting nuts with 600 items to put back on sale every week (I was selling 400 items a week in average).
I opened a bio clothing vendor, and sales were great. I keep 150-200 items on the vendor at all times, and restock every two days. I gave up BE on my alt eventually to do something more fun, found a good supplier of tissues and kept business going except that in the last week I've starting wondering.
Bazaar sales are great when I take the time to put items there. I get tells everyday from people wanting Bio Clothing and were referred to me, I had to move my shop and it decreased my sales some but it's still decent as I put the vendors on the map, but...
At least five other tailors have come since I arrived. I had to decrease my prices up to 40% on master items because they were all pricing them at 5k. The standard clothing sales have decreased drastically, I now keep 200 items or so that I know should sell, but they don't. People ask me everyday for enhanced clothing that I can't make, and there are 3 shops around that sell clothes for maybe what it costs me to buy the tissues and make the clothes... I also want time for myself and no matter what title I put on I still get tells for clothes, and people don't understand that I usually only craft in the morning, to be able to do something else in the evening. Then you have those friends who only come to you when they need clothes and it makes you think...
Then there is this patch, with absolutely nothing new to tailors. Just a few fixes that should have happened a while ago, a few new colors I will have fun for 2 days if it comes live, and basically nothing new. I didn't see anything about incap decay in it either. With the vendor change to 30 days I will prolly give it a try and increase my stock to 600 or so again, but there are so many tailors around today that can do things just as well as me, that I'm about to just give up and give them my customers. I enjoy playing my alt or dancing in the cantina much more than I enjoy answering 3 tells at once about clothes.
Does anyone else feel same way? I still love making clothes for myself and close friends, and I love keeping vendors stocked, but I just don't know if it's worth the trouble, and can a tailor even have good sales without doing custom orders?
Anyway, I'm closing in on 800k in the bank and believe me when I say I'm not hoarding it. I like making outfits for people, I like having some adventures in my life and seeing the galaxy. Bottom line: do what will make the game fun for you!!

Songe,
I've been reading your posts over the last couple of weeks, and you've definitely sounded more and more jaded. Not surprised you're considering hanging it up. It's too bad because I've always respected you and enjoyed reading your posts, but you gotta do whatever is funnest for ya. I don't think this is so much a reflection on the tailoring occupation in this game as the fact that it sounds like you're been doing it for a while and might be ready for something new, which happens to all of us. I started out as an architect, and grew both bored and frustrated with that. You pretty much exhaust all the creative possibilities in the first few weeks, and after that I had to endure all the distasteful pricing and competitivepressures which sounds like one of your beefs. It got to the point where if I wanted to be competitive price-wise I had to sell structures at material value, meaning my time was valueless, and at that point I knew it was time to do something else. Switching professions and trying something new added new life to the game. Also, looking back, I know of very few artisans that are the same profession now as they were back when I was an architect a few months ago. People change, it's healthy.
I'm still enjoying tailoring, although I don't wear the tailor tag all that often. Playing my second character who has no crafting at all lets me blow off steam. Nothing more therapeudic than blasting things into smithereens. With a combat character though I've found you don't get that nice feeling you get as a crafter when you've helped someone a lot and the appreciation that goes along with that. That is what I miss when I don't play my tailor for a while.
Anyhow, good luck to you, if you give up tailor we'll miss you, but probably see you around the forum and around the SWG universe.
