For those whom this thread title applies I wanna know how much you like Armorsmith compared to Tailoring. Although I haven't had any time to work my way up in Armorsmith very much (been doing a TON of surveying and working on XP for dancer but I dropped that profession recently).

I realize the hunt for resources is even more of a pain in the butt (most of my surveying has been in preparation for master armorsmith). But how does it compare? Please tell me everything because I am curios to know and would also like to hear about what I am in for.

Thankies in advance!

I recently picked up Armorsmith. I'm a Master Tailor and might I tell you that armorsmith simply makes me want to gouge my eyes out and jump off a bridge.

I prefer Tailor 10:1.

He knew he was as good as gone, but gone was somewhere he really didn't mind going to.
Since his shuttle had crashed, many years had passed, and the pictures of his loved ones that he drew on the walls of the cave
had finally faded.
He put out his smoke, proceeded towards the lake, repeating to himself,
everything beautiful is far away.

Yeah, but then without eyes, you couldn't find a bridge to jump from.

It's immensly annoying in the begining as you start your hunt for high quality materials. 5 different types of steel, 5 different types of iron, 2 types of copper, yavinian wooly hide, corellian fiberplast, lokain leathery hide, Intrusive ore, nabooian fiberplast, known solid petrochem fuel, dantooine animal bone, rori animal bone, crystaline gems, amorphous gems, skevon reactive gas. and so on and so forth.

Trying to find all those specific resources all with 800+ oq, shock, and malleability is hell. Trying to get decent quantities of the animal based resources is an exercise in futility. Knowing that you'll probably never be able to produce armor as nice as those few armorsmiths who've been in operation since day one. Finding out that nothing you produce until you reach master will be bought by anyone. All these things are what I find to be the downside of being an armorsmith.

I do like the challenge tho, knowing that the more effort I put into my armor (the resource hunt), the better quality it will be. We can sell clothing as novice tailors because our clothing as novices is exactly the same as master clothing. As an armorsmith things only get better as you advance. And I realize the resource hunt will ease up the longer I'm at it. Eventually I'll have decent amounts of each type and after that it's just checking to find better stuff.

Oh and I'm finding the grind much slower then with tailor. AUK's just don't grant much xp, kinda tempted to buy up loads of crappy hide and churn out synth cloth and armorweave segments to grind with mbari chest plates.

Well, let me give the pros and the cons:

Tailor Pros:

  • Extremely wide selection of schematics, even at low levels

  • Extremely wide selection of colors, even at low levels.

  • All that matters is amount of resources as opposed to quality

  • Everyone secretly loves clothing

  • I make upwards of 50,000 credits per day without BE enhanced items as a master

  • You will meet many long-time customers and develop great friendships

  • Clothes are more valued than armor, whereas armor is seen as disposable, clothing is seen as memorable.

Armor Pros:

  • Once you get composite, you will be rolling credits.

  • Extremely easy to get experience for Novice.

  • Many people buy armor

  • I can't think of anymore, haha

Tailoring Cons:

  • On many servers, your competition will be utterly severe.

  • Because you use so few specific resources, you often run out of them quickly.

  • Tailoring is a "permanent profession." That is to say, as of now, items are not decaying. Once you sell an item to a customer, you will not sell it to them again.

  • Extreme demand for high level objects, many require crated items that can be tedious to produce

  • Grinding is hell until you get to Field Wear IV (This was the second to last tree I mastered, I almost killed myself after crafting 1500+ shirts.)

  • Many items are extremely bugged.

  • People never know what they want, you will end up crafting a lot of items that will never sell.

Armor Cons:

  • Even as a Novice, the resource requirement is outrageous.

  • Extremely boring as a Novice, very very few items to sell.

  • Extreme lack of schematics.

  • Most armor is completely unvalued when compared to composite.

  • People treat you like dirt

  • You require many tailor-specific items, ie Synth Cloth

  • No style variation, with the exception of color

  • Until you get to about tier III, you will collect little to no credits off of your items.

Though the list may appear smaller, this is only from a Novice Armorsmith as opposed to a Master Tailor. I by far favor Tailoring, maybe its a personal thing, but I wouldn't give it up even for an FSCS.

That's just how madly in love with my clothes I am.

Yeah I had the feeling that it was pointless to even try to sell armor until one reaches master, since people only want to buy the best when it comes to armor- and for good reason, your armor can often mean the difference between life and death.

I'm using mabari chests to grind right now, but I don't get much time to work on that because of running my tailor shop and surveying.

I noticed the resource problem right away. I had done a little homework on the resources I would need and have actually begun the process of stockpiling it right now. I look forwrd to being able to sit down and experiement with the armor and see how good I can get it, but it's a long trip yet.

Question from a guy who did Artisan then Tailor. When you have multiple slots for metals or any other resource in the same schematic, is there any harm in using the same resource for each (if say they have the good stats you're looking for) or does this decrease the quality of the end product?

I am definitely happy that no matter how crappy my fiberplast is that it's still a salable product with the same chance to have sockets as any other piece. Takes the edge off. I'm not sure if I could handle going planet to planet laying down harvesters and then having to maintain all of them.
