Thread: I Don't Want To Grind, but...
I've definitely done my fair share of grinding. I grinded to get Weaponsmith, I grinding to get Tailor, I grinded to get Master Artisan. It's something I'm willing to do to "get to the fun stuff." Now that I've gotten Tailor, I told myself I wasn't going to grind. Five days later, I had 10k xp. Seems that nobody wants the stuff I can make, besides the Military Packs. I then spent 2 hours grinding out Ribbed Shirts and picked up another 22k xp to get me to Field Wear I. Since then I've been grinding a lot, and have since picked up Field Wear II, and should be getting Casual Wear I in about20 minutes. If I concentrate, I can pick up 600xp/minute by grinding.
My question for you people is, I really don't want to grind. It's boring. I'd rather be making clothes for people, not for the trash can. 1) How many of you grind, and how many of you are able to progress at a good pace by just making clothes for people? 2) What branches have you found to be the most in demand? I've had a lot of requests for Body Suits, i.e. Casual Wear, but then I've also had several for Dusters and such, i.e. Field Wear.
Another question for you Tailors with shops: What's been the most effective way of getting people to come to your shop? I'm 18k from picking up Advertising 3, and I'm hoping that registering on the planetary map will help. What other tricks are effective?
I don't grind myself and people are really hating me for it.
I have been a tailor for about ten days, playing for 15 days and haven't earned my first box on the tailor treeyet.
I have since that time earned enough general xp making clothes to get weaponsmith and half way to architect.
So I guess if anything erks me is that once someone is a profession shouldn't all their exp making those items go for that profession.
Droid engineers get droid exp for making batteries, armoursmiths get experience for bone armour, tailors for clothing, chef's for food, weaponsmiths for weapons etc.
My main purpose of playing is my shop and to that end its going well. Nevertheless the people that know me are really getting tired of the clothes i can make and are starting to buy clothes from a grinder because its at the top of the tree. Ironically they come back to me telling me that they prefer me as their tailor because I am a lot of fun to deal with and in my mind that is because I actually am playing a tailor.
I sell every piece of clothing that I make because I actually make clothes to wear instead of just that item which makes me the most experience. 4 socket belts and jackets and different colours and styles and outfits and the whole works.
I would seriously love to continue to provide a service and have fun than do something else like grinding for days on end just to make something someone thinks they want to wear.
Fact of the matter is that most of the clientele I have really needs to be educated on what clothes can do for them and when they figure it out they actually want to buy multiple sets of clothes.
I think I am the only one on my server who makes wound healing clothing for customers even though i get little experience for it because it provides a service to my customer instead of to myself.
This is supposed to be fun and I find it sad that so many people think they have to spend countless hours doing something they don't want to do to be that which they think they want to be.
Funny thing is that when they get there they have no idea what its like to be a tailor.
I don't particularly enjoy grinding. I mainly do it when i am getting very close to levelling. I have casual wear III, Tailoring II, Field II and Formal I. Pretty good for someone who's focusing on customers more than how much crap they can make right? Well this twi'lek that visited my shop last night apparently disagreed. I actually made things for her to try out with no obligation (as i could sell them on my vendor). She informed me that every piece of lower body wear i had was crap. We went thru hot pants, long skirts, pants, shorts, everything I had that even remotely looked good and she snubbed her nose at everything. She wasn't even nice about it and basically told me to call her back when I had "the good stuff." I thought i did... You know why my stuff isnt the good stuff? Because of people who ground to master in 2 weeks after the start of the game.
In beta a wrapped skirt and a rugged jacket with a nice short sleeved shirt were "The good stuff" because people werent grinding their butts off. Now I offer to sell someone a Light Bustier and it's like"Don't you have anything better?"and here I am thinking I'm caught up enough to make "Nice stuff".
I go in the cantina and every dancer in sight is wearing the revealing fleshwraps and exotic leotards. Soon those will be as played out as the good ol' jacket without a shirt cleavage look. And unfortunately there's not "Better" in that department because they're master tailored items.
I know I don't have a right to complain really. It's my own lack of determination or power-hunger that keeps me swirling around the middle of the whirlpool in the tailoring toilet. But over-grinding will ruin it for everybody. Skilling shouldn't be a race. blah blah blah.. blah blah blah... and so on and so forth.
The thing that's really disheartening is that I'm afraid I'm starting to lose my hard-won customer base, as they get impatient with my lack of progress and drift off to buy stuff from the people who powergrinded to Master Tailor weeks ago.
I don't think anybody really understands just how excruciatingly slow they've made advancement in Tailoring these days. I think a lot of people assume it's on a level with other professions, and figure you're just slacking or something if you're not Master yet, since it's so relatively easy to do in other professions.
I finally started grinding last night. After two weeks of being Novice Tailor, and just making what I sell (or not sale as the case may be, the last two days I have not sold a thing) I only had about 16K in tailoring xp. So yesterday I sat down for a couple of hours and just churned away on the ribbed shirts and finally got enough for my first skill box. I went ahead and did Field I - though it doesn't give me anything really exciting.
I too would love to not grind, but if I didn't, I would still be making the same thing, and still not selling anything.
I know the devs have stated we are supposed to be getting xp for experimenting, and we are supposed to be getting xp for our factories whether we are online or off... I don't think either of these have been fixed. If these things get fixed, it would certainly help avoid some of the grinding aspects.

I feel you pain...
However, I am holding off on the "grind" until the "big update" comes in because I have been told that with that update, that the crating tool remembers to the last item you made.
I have almost earned formal 1 with out grinding a single thing, and I have sold every single item I have made.

This seems like a good idea, but you can just use /selectdraftschematic to do that now. Problem with waiting is you will get screwed. Theyare removing UXP which will hurt a bunch, and they'll probably remove more sources of XP by the time the patch comes out.
When they added in Practice Mode I went home over lunch on a whim to try it out. I saw it was 25% instead of 5% so didn't go back to work! I grinded out two hours of shirts and two hours more the next day. Got three boxes. They "nerfed" it the next day. Had I waited I'd have lost that XP.
Waiting only hurts. ![]()
tell me your F*ing with me? The DEVs are removing UXP? They should increase it to help support the non-grinders!

Not entirely true. They are removing self-use UXP. This means you will still get UXP when others use your items, but you won't get it when you use your own components to make something. For hand made components this kind of makes sense because you were getting xp twice for them. For factory made components it won't make a big difference since you were only getting the UXP of the1/10 xp that factory made items get.
All of the items in the Novice Tailor box do give you Tailoring XP, as do all of the clothing in the Tailor skill tree. (There are a few exceptions to this, but they are on the correspondents list to get fixed) However, if you make the clothing from the Domestic Arts tree you will still get GCXP just like you did before you became a Tailor. The XP is based on where the schematic comes from, not the skill of the person making it.
