Thread: What do you need to make clothes?

I know, I know, a total newbie question, but I havn't even touched artisian/tailor yet. And my assumption is that you need to build up factories and put up harvesters all day, ect., to get the materials you need to make clothes? And if you have to climb up an artisian branch, does that mean I have to go through making 10 million 2 cent pistols to get up to where I can start making clothes?

Thanks!

No, once you get novice artisan you can make some really basic clothing, but you just get better clothing and fancier stuff, more colors etc, as you move up the ladder.

As for putting up factories and harvestors etc, yes if you want to be fairly self sufficient, and not rely on having to buy from other people, and this way you can have more control over the quality of your resources, versus shopping on the bazaar or whatever.

Enjoy!

Artisan: You need a Mineral Surveying Tool and a General Crafting Tool. Using those, you can make your own Chemical Surveying Tool and your own Clothing and Armor Crafting Tool. You can level up to Domestic IV just sampling for any cheap metal and selling Surveying Tools and Crafting Tools on the Bazaar. You can also make some clothes that sell, especially Casual Pants, Shortsleeve Shirts, Shortsleeve Jackets, and Casual Jackets in black, tan, and white. You won't sell lots, though, so your basic artisan's bread and butter starter tools are going to be your real sellers until ...

Novice Tailor: By the time you hit Novice Tailor, you're going to want two personal chemical harvesters, onepersonal mineral harvester, and one wind generator. You'll also need some way to pay for these things, so what you probably want are two windmills and seven or eight harvesters. Use three of those harvesters to keep you in raw materials; use the other four or five to harvest for water, low grade ore, aluminum, or whatever material is selling to grinders on your planet/server in mass quantities. You're looking for something that sells for 4 to 5 credits per unit as fast as it hits the bazaar; break it up into even hundreds as close to 3000 units per sale as you can, to leave room for the other stuff you sell on the bazaar.

Do you need a small house at this point? Maybe. If you have a knack for getting people to show up at your shop, and you can pick up enough more General Crafting XP to get to Merchant 3 or above. Then you can put in a Bulky Terminal and sell more than 25 items at a time. You can also set up a showroom with 3D models of your clothes that people can browse easily. But unless you use the XP you get from that terminal to rush directly to Novice Merchant, that Bulky Terminal will eat you out of house and home! Bulky Terminals charge you 1% of your inventory value per hour in maintenance. Standard terminals and droids are only slightly better. Get to Novice Merchant and use NPC merchants, they're affordable.

Note that if you don't open the shop at this point, you're going to want to do so no later than ...

"Intermediate" Tailor: Once you get to Casual 3, Field 3, or Formal 4 you are going to want a shop, a solar generator, a wearables factory, and all the harvesters you can get your hands on. You are now making items that people want - but most of those items require factory-made components. The bad news is that this is a huge capital investment. The good news is at this point, you can stop screwing around with your old harvesting business if you want, because you should be self-sufficient in cash.

Master Tailor: I haven't made it to this point, but whatI hear is that at this point, you need that second wearables factory. You may want a larger house. You are now out of lots, basically, but the good news is that if you need to buy all of your resources from other miners, you can probably afford to do so.

Minor correction: Above, where I refer to Merchant 3, what I meant was Business III under Artisan. That's the magic point at which you can get your first vendor terminal.

The good news about the Bulky Terminal, by the way, is that it counts its insane maintenance costs as "business" and you get merchanting XP for that, so if you keep 50 or a 100 items on it, you'll make Novice Merchant in a week or less. But during that week, don't be surprised if you find yourself running low-level combat missions on top of your mining income to keep that Bulky Terminal in maintenance fees.

I know you can make fancier stuff later, my question there though was, "To climb that ladder, do I need to make 10 million 2 cent guns before I get to another tailor block?", i.e., I thought I saw with Artisian that to get to the second tailoring block in the second branch over (can't remember the name), you have to pass through 1 block where you make guns..To get to the 4th block, you gotta pass through the 3rd block of making more guns.. Or am I wrong?

Basically all I want out of crafting right now, is to make booze, and clothes. My primary time goes towards my fencing, heheheh.

Thanks!

I'm a tailor, and I have never crafted a single gun.

To get to novice tailor you can just work up through the domestic arts line.

Clothes sell better than newbie guns anyway. Make black things. Good sellers are the jackets and when you get them the travel backpacks.

Yeah throughout Dom Arts, put up full black sets of clothes, they're always a big seller for new players dying to get out of their starter clothes and working on a tight budget.

So that is what has been happening!!!!

I didn;t know this ... dang. Was wonder what the heck was draining my funds and where the heck the Merch XP was coming from. I don't have skill points to spare to mess with Mechant skills but maybe I have no choice.

Just a note, most people guess that the NPC merchant which is permanently set at maintenance 1 is probably bugged as well and probably should be more.

The merchant correspondent sent the high prices of the bizbox and the low prices of the NPC in as one of the five items. Most people think it probably should be based as a percentage of sales, not stock. But it's hard to make suggestions about how to change things when nobody knows whether it's the bulky terminal or the NPC that's bugged or if it's both of them but in different ways.
