So last night, I was filling out a custom order and I had another patron waiting for me to finsh up. When all of a sudden another novice tailor starts saying "OH i can make anything she can make, would u like me to do your outfit?" and basically going about trying to steal my business right in front of me. Lucky for me, my customer was willing to wait for me to finsih up.

I mean I totally welcome competition, but I found it very rude for the person totry and steal my business. Like a few days ago she was selling backpacks out in front of the Starport. And I totally want to jump in and start yelling to everyone that I was selling backpacks as well. But I held back .. and went back to grinding.

I'm just wondering what you guys think? Or if anyone had any such experience, and how you handled it.

I commend you on keeping your cool, I dont think I could have lol. I would have said something more than likely nasty. Anyway just keep plugging away and your attitude will keep new customers coming to you. Obviously the person waiting on you saw the value of dealing with a good honest tailor.

It's because of situations like that that I do not train other people in tailoring. I've paid for every box myself, and I see no reason to train the competition (who will probably be undercutting me anyway )

I have to admire you for keeping your cool!

No I think you handled the situation very well, as did your customer.

I have noticed that some tailors are just not very nice people. I have a situation on my server where one is trying to undercut my prices. Until I put something on my vendor, he charge 9999....ROFL even for a bounty hunter's pack. Once I put something on my vendor he charge 500 credits less. Well, what he doesn't know is that my prices are generated off zachary.org. Its a wonderful help...and my prices are very cheap in comparison to others. Anyway...he's losing money...I've not said a word to him...but I have banned him from my shop. I really think that if folks want to compete they should compete in honest ways, not try to backstab.

I've had someone stand outside my shop selling clothes cheaper than what was on my vendor. That was worse, but it was...taken care of (someone led about 6 swarming lesser dewbacks into the area and the little guy ran off)

I was sent a /tell while I was running through bestine one day asking if I could make something for them. Someone that just saw me running by and heard my name before he said.
I was only on planet to check my harvesters but I stopped to help him anyway. Becuase he wanted something large I had to go to the crafting station.
What did I see there? A novice tailor yelling that he was giving away clothes for free.
My customer still wanted to deal with me. Actually made me feel rather good and I gave him a discount as well. While standing there I had two more orders walk up as well.
Now the guy next to me seemed to have four or five customers as compared to my 3, but those three were more valuable customers to me than any of those customers probably were to him.

Once I was done helping my people I ran off to take care of my harvesters and on the way back I got another tell from someone else in town that wanted something they saw another person buy from the guy giving things away. Again with the warm fuzzies.

Just selling people clothes isnt everything, youve got to be sociable as well.

No, you're not wrong to be pissed off.

But in all of this I haven't heard one thing... have you actually tried talking to the other tailor? Perhaps they're just desparate to try to sell something, or your customer had already promised them the work, or... if you don't ask you'll never know for certain.

And who knows, if you play your cards right you might just get a valuable partnership/friendship out of it (however unlikely I must admit that is).

Still, it is rude to try to steal business away from another tailor, particularly in their presence.

Well, this is apretty clear example of why trade guilds started up in the first place.

The free issue is a bit disconcerting if done in bulk. I have occasionally given away clothes to a friendly person waiting for a shuttle. Get my name out there and all. But when you have people grinding at a station spamming that they are giving away free clothes, it does hurt the market.

But without non-consentual PvP, you cannot actually enforce things like trade guilds. But with non-consentual PvP, the griefing you would see makes free clothes look like a joke.

Double edged sword.

I have a variation on this. I was selling stuff for 600 credits. This one person kept coming to my vendor and buying all my stock to resell at 1500 credits. So I started naming the item with the price in the item name. haha, end of problem. People stopped buying from him and sent me tells asking for the item at my cost.

How is this "a problem"? You put it up for 600cr, you expected to make 600cr and you were making 600cr. Just because someone else sees that items will sell for more and they buy cheap from you and sell at market price to others doesn't make it a problem. Obviously the better fix for this would be for you to sell it at 1500cr, making an extra 900cr each.

You're obviously not in it for the profit, so why would you try and screw over this other guy who's just using you as a wholesaler? You're making your money that you expected to, and if you hadn't done your price labeling you'd probably have a much more stable source of sales too from people doing that.

All you did was hurt yourself and the other guys by demanding to sell that cheaply. There's no win for you in this.

As to why it's a problem, my vendor is in place to provide a variety of clothing to players at what I deem is a reasonable price. Cleaning out a particular item so you can resell it at another price circumvents that. My actions haven't hurt me at all. I still sell to a variety of people and make a decent profit. He is welcome to resell my items, but I doubt he's having much luck with the price on the description line.

I'm making 150% profit on this item. Including factory costs. So your whole "You're obviously not in it for the profit" statement goes right out the window. Maybe your "fix" is a better solution for you, but not for me. You're welcome to do business as you wish, but don't presume to lecture me on my lack of profits when you obviously have no idea what my overhead is. I'm winning every sale and so are my legimate customers.

The problem here is the person way just grabbing it off the vendor... While it's nice to make sales, if you want to get items from someone to resell, contact them and get the items directly to put on your vendor. It's not a matter of making credits, it's a matter of being rude.

I disagree, it's speculation. If you know the market better than they do, and you know they're drastically underselling, it's a totally valid tactic. You could be nice and tell them that they could be getting more money, but you'd probably get a rude reply like 'I can sell for whatever I want to!'. By now everyone should be figuring out that combat types aren't hurting for money, there's no reason to sell stuff at cost or even slightly above.
