Thread: New Tailor getting orders for crates of synth cloth. What do these go for?
2500 is the average for Synthetic cloth.
3500-4k for Reinforced Fiber

That's what I see on my server (Bria). The price of 2500 per crate of synth cloth seems to have become pretty standardized.

I pay significantly less... about 1650 for synth, 1800 for Trim and Jewelry Settings (I don't bother with factories). Of course, I have an ongoing business relationship with my supplier, so YMMV. I haven't needed Reinforced Fiberpanels yet.
Gosh.. prices are getting lower and lower. When I first asked this question here like a month ago when I was still a struggling tailor, the average answers I got were:
3k - 5k for SC
5k - 6k for RFP
I'm still selling at those prices. 3k for SC, 5.5k for RFP.
2500cr seems right.
I can't tell you how many people I piss off by refusing to make schematics for people just to help support young tailors like youself.
Some armorsmiths just don't get it.
As a Master tailor I don't really sell synth crates either since I use nearly more than I made each day, just can keep those in supply.
Of course I use factory synth panels for everything, because it's so much easier and quicker than making them by hand if you don't need identical parts. ![]()
I purposely set the prices a bit high, since the further I advance in Tailoring the more I need the stuff for myself, and Tailoring's my main business, not Armorsmith Supply. (Incidentally, if you're selling, Synth Cloth is also used - in rather large quantities - for Master Architect furniture items.)
I don't like making schematics because it's about 10x more work. You have to get with the coustemer, trade the resources, make the item (pray you don't fail) Give back the schematic and get your creds. Plus there's a MAJOR trust issue that make that difficault too... It's just bad all together...
But back on the synth cloth price... 2500?! Isn't that a bit steep? 5 Creds a unit? If you harvest your own materials on a fair spot (70% I think is the number Iused, and 40% for a wind generator to power harvesters)its easy to make the crate for 350 creds (.7 creds/unit. youcan get this down to .2 with the right harvesters/generators/concentrations)+ assembly... Now don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting you sell the stuff for 1K or anything like that, but wouldn't it be wise, when considering competition to look at adjusting the range? Heck, not even the DEs can turn a 7:1 revenue to material cost ratio... And synth cloth is a Novice tailor item...
In any case... If you can move it for 2500 go ahead... Just remember that the products made with it will carry the same cost inflation (Which is ironic because we set the armor price by setting the cloth price, but we don't really have any interest in armor... Not a good arrangement for the armorsmiths and marksmen/brawlers, but great for us.)
JimtheCatus, I am so glad I am not near your city, your planet, and thank you, your SERVER!
Only darn thing that a tailor can make a profit on on those crates. It is all right for other professions to charge 5-10cr/unit? ...but not tailors?
I agree with Magik. As a newbie tailor, this is my only reliable source of income for the forseeable future, since we have a fair number of Master Tailors on my server already, and no item decay. The customer base is slowly dwindling as they outfit themselves to their tastes, so competition is rising and prices are dropping.
5cr a unit is not unreasonable. (Much as I hate "per unit" pricing. 2500 per crate is the minimum I would sell because my TIME is worth that much.)
I agree that the crates are basically the only thing that a lot of tailors can sell for enough to turn a profit. But you'll notice that the price I sell mine at isn't even in the post. I've been moving them at 2K a crate (It's called market competition) for some time now. As an aside, there are no other tailors in my region that are selling crates in the places I am (I look frequently so as to adjust prices, but that's kind of hard when you're the only one selling...) and probably for good reason: there's no market where I am. I can put 5 crates of synth cloth up at 2K and have them go unsold. It's gotten better as the churn has spawned new novice armorsmiths, but even with my radically underpriced (Because like I said... No market) RFPs going for 2.5K, I frequently ended up re-posting the sale.
The price I've come to was carefully derived on a cost to benifit ratio and precisely derived based on a maximum production rate, materials costs, labor costs, etc. I mean labor wise what does it take? (Especially now that experimentation is gone, which used to make it take a lot longer.) Plant Generator, 3Chem Harvesters (personal) on fibreplast, 1ChemHarvester (personal) on polymer (Same % as fibreplast).Create a schematic. Feed Schematic and resources to factory. Log. Wait 1 day. Log in. Retrive crates. Take to bazzar. Post sales. Log. Wait 3 days (possibly starting a new run at step 1). Tada! Sold. Is that a lot of labor? Nope.
All I'm saying is that it may be worth considering all of the long term ramifications of charging 2500 creds instead of something lower. I'm not discouraging anyone from selling at that price. And if someone in my region where actually to sell crates of anything I'd adjust my prices to be really close (yet competetive, within 5%.) But until then I see no reason what-so-ever to cause inflation in my region so that the numbers I work with are better.
(As an interesting aside, becausestructure maintence does not inflate with the economy, there is a mild regulating factor introduced by it that forces deflation to have a finite minimum, but causes inflation to grow without bounds if you harvest your own materials. Since resource costs don't change with inflation like they do in the real world, as inflation increases, they become basically insignificant in all cost considerations. We are nowhere near that point, but it's something to keep in mind.)
